The Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Sponges are a multi-purpose tool that is great for many uses in the home. In cleaning duties there are many instances where a sponge will come in handy, and I think that these are a great option when it comes to both kitchen and bathroom cleaning. There are a number of tools that I use (or have used), and this is one that I keep coming back to for those easier jobs. The sponges can be purchased as singles, in packs of 3, or like we purchased recently, in packs of 6 for right around $4.00 total.
The sponges themselves have a softer side that can be used to wash down virtually anything, and then a harder side that is to be used on those tougher jobs. That tougher side (or green side) is basically a scouring pad that is best used on hard surfaces or dishes that can really stand up to the rough cleaning. I have used that side of the sponge to work on spills on the floor, plates or bowls that have been left sitting, and animal food dishes that needed a good scrubbing. Basically, you only want to use the scouring side on items that can hold up to the rough cleaning.
The softer side (or yellow side) of the sponge is better for glassware, plastic-ware, porcelain, or polished surfaces. If you are cleaning something like nice wine-glasses or a toilet, you want to use the softer side to protect the finish. I also advise that you use a different sponge for the bathroom and kitchen, and it is easy to do when they sell the sponges in 3 or 6 packs. It is also highly recommended that after each use you make sure to "clean" off the sponge to remove any foods or other substances. You do this, so that when the sponge dries out, you don't have hardened particles that could affect the next use of your sponge. It also tends to prolong the life of each sponge.
Each of the sponges is 4.5 inches long and 2.7 inches wide, with a thickness of about half an inch. For best use, I would always suggest wetting down both sides of the sponge first so that you are getting the best use out of it each time. It also works best with hot water and soap, but of course there are times where you just want to use the sponge to soak up something that has been spilled. In those instances you can start out with it dry, and then rinse it off after each use. Being very absorbent, they are great for wiping up water that has been left on the counter after washing dishes by hand. I would have to say that these are some of the better sponges out there, and I have frequently found them to be a great tool for cleaning virtually any surface in the house.
