I had never heard of Schwan's Home Service, Inc. until we moved to our current home just over two years ago. One day I heard a knock at my door (unfortunately, it wasn't Ed McMahon with a million dollar check) and that's when I was greeted by a friendly representative from Schwan's.
Schwan's Home Service, Inc. is a company that delivers frozen food items to your home. They offer several products including meat, seafood, poultry, entrees, appetizers, vegetables, side dishes, pizza, sandwiches, beverages, desserts, and more. All of their products are pictured in their bi-monthly catalog or on their website. They also have a toll-free phone number for phone orders.
I was hesitant to place an order at first but once I received my first delivery, I was hooked on Schwan's. Most of the products that we tried were excellent. The only exception was the Alaskan Salmon, which didn't taste like what we are used to. My kids are finicky eaters and I was thrilled when I discovered that they liked the Stir Fry Vegetable Blend with Sauce. Also a favorite are the french fries, cheese enchiladas, and of course, ice cream.
In addition to several indulgent foods (i.e. high calorie), Schwan's offers an extensive selection of healthy food, referred to as their LiveSmart products. Each LiveSmart item lists how many calories, fat, sodium, and carbohydrates are in each serving.
There are three ways to place an order with Schwan's: online, by toll-free phone number, or directly from the truck driver, referred to as the Customer Service Manager. I prefer to order online because the website often has sales and discounts that aren't printed in the catalog. The website is also useful for looking up recipes and reading product reviews on each item.
Schwan's Home Service, Inc. delivers once every two weeks (on the same weekday - mine is every other Tuesday). If you are not home when the Customer Service Manager stops by, he or she will leave you a notice stating the next delivery date. You can also pre-arrange to have your order left at your doorstep in a fully insulated freezer bag, which costs $4.99 per bag. You can pay for your order online or by cash, check, major credit card, and food stamps right at your door.
There are several reasons why I like using Schwan's Home Service, Inc., including convenience, quality, and ease of ordering. I'm not much of a cook so I find it extremely useful that I can have ready-made entrees in my freezer that can be on my table in less than an hour. It's nice to know that I don't have to pre-plan meals everyday and can feed my family something delicious and healthy.
With the good comes the bad and there are two points that I'd like to make as well; the prices on some items are much higher than at the grocery store, especially items that you know go on sale often. I only purchase items that are budget-friendly and that I know I'm not overpaying for. Also, my delivery route has had a lot of turnover since I started buying from Schwan's. In fact, for several months there was no Customer Service Manager stopping by. I only recently started to purchase from Schwan's again when I received a catalog on my door.
You can check out Schwan's website to see if they deliver in your area. If they don't and you would like to try their products, you can have them shipped overnight. If they do, take advantage of their first-time customer discount and try them out. You might just end up with a new friend in your neighborhood.
