The School for Creative and Performing Arts (S.C.P.A.) in Cincinnati, is a gift to the city.  Children must audition to attend the schoool.  The school offers classes for children in grades 4-12.  Children auditioning in grades 4-6 must audition for every Major.  The Majors are:  Creative Writing, Drama, Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music (Orchestra and Band), and Dance.

Currently, a new school (a new location and new building) is being built with independant funds.  Students in grades K-12 will be able to audition to attend this new location.

The new school building will be significantly smaller than expected due to insufficient funds. A thought that has been spreading: in result to lack of space, teachers and students may be forced to share the same classrooms. SCPA seems to be evolving into another money gimmick. This is not to say that they are striving for funds and not for the achievement of the students. However, simply put, this unique and gifted school is forced to continue being treated as a regular Cincinnati public school (CPS) when in reality they are much more. These students put time from their regular school day as well as late nights (some staying after nine p.m.) with pure hard work. If there is a teacher absence, there is not enough money to hire and pay enough substitute teachers to maintain a regular working class environment. The significant amount of stairs may be a slight drawback for the visiting parents and other adults, however, for the students it is a way of obtaining regular daily exercise without over exerting themselves. This is not to say that the stairs are easy to overcome while traveling to and from classes with large book bags, art supplies, text books, sets, large instruments, correct apparel for dance, drama, and costume majors, as well as the normal necessities for a school setting.

It is well known that the current location of S.C.P.A. is not the most ideal. Regardless, it is a few streets further down that are the areas to be wary about. The new location for the school appears to look in better condition, but there is still no word as to how the park nearby will be cleaned and maintained for the better safety of the students. This school is perfect for students with great interest and skills in the arts. They are always surrounded by peers that share their interests and guided by professionals in their area of expertise in their quest to become great artists and for their individual voices to be heard.
