Save-A-Lot - Inkster, MI —

I'm pretty loyal to my local chain grocery store but occasionally I like to shop at Save-A-Lot for the lower prices on certain items.  Save-A-Lot is a discount grocery store where you bag or box your own groceries.

I'm a comparison shopper so I like to think that I'm educated on prices.  That said, I think that Save-A-Lot offers some pretty good deals on many things but I also know which products I can find for cheaper at other stores.

The best deals that I have found at Save-A-Lot are for most meats, frozen foods, baking goods, and breads.  Therefore, I usually shop the perimeter of the store and seldom shop the aisles.

After buying frozen salmon for almost $20 at a warehouse store for several years, I was thrilled to discover that I can buy a good sized bag for less than $5 at Save-A-Lot.  The same goes for other types of fish.

My local grocery store occasionally sells hotdogs on sale for around $1 per package but I always know that I can rely on Save-A-Lot for turkey franks for less than $1.  Not only are the turkey franks cheaper, but they are also healthier than beef franks.

For a treat, my kids love those pre-packaged lunches that include crackers, sliced meat and cheese, and a candy bar.  They cost over $2 per package at my grocery store but are always a reliable 99 cents at Save-A-Lot.

When I need baking goods such as flour, sugar, and spices, I purchase them from Save-A-Lot.  Spices that cost over $3 per bottle at major grocery stores can often be found for less than $1 and are just as good in my opinion.

Lastly, I almost always find a good deal on a loaf of bread at Save-A-Lot.  I wouldn't make a trip strictly for bread, but I usually add a loaf to my cart when I'm shopping there.

For other grocery items, I don't often purchase those at Save-A-Lot.  The prices may be cheaper but I prefer to buy healthier low-fat foods and Save-A-Lot doesn't seem to carry many of those items.  Also, because I'm a comparison shopper, I know what items are on sale at other stores that end up costing less than Save-A-Lot

Occasionally, I will find something intriguing at Save-A-Lot such as the Bath Solutions, Inc. Sink Scents Scented Sink Strainer/Stopper that I found for only $1.  However, if you are looking for a lot of variety, you won't find that at Save-A-Lot.  I consider it a no frills type of store that sells basic goods at basic prices.  There are name brand items, but again I can usually find those on sale at other stores.

One thing worth mentioning is that other than apples and potatoes, I've never had good luck with the produce at Save-A-Lot.  It either wasn't fresh or didn't taste very good.

Overall, I think that Save-A-Lot is a great resource for finding good prices on several items.  I wouldn't do all of my major shopping there but I know enough to buy the quality items that my family likes at great prices.

My husband shops at Aldi's often. I don't like the long lines so I shop there about once a year. They do have some great deals, especially during the holidays.

This sounds like our Aldi's grocery store chain. And the funny thing is this: I've only been in Aldi's twice since they opened 6 or 7 years ago and both times I only shopped on the perimeters too. I need to go there more often but I pass about 5 or 6 grocery stores in my area before I would even get to the outskirts of town to get to Aldi's. ~Gigi
