Sauza Gold Tequila —

Many peoole like margaritas and living in a state like Texas, maragaritas rank among the most popular mixed drinks served at restaurants, thanks in no small part to the abundance of Mexican and Tex- Mex restuarants in the Houston Metropolitan area. Margaritas can get quite costly due to the high price one must pay for premium tequila. But there are some decent budget- priced brands and one of them is  Sauza Gold Tequila, a product imported from Mexico.

Tequila Commentary:

Sauza Gold Tequila is light gold in color and it pours to a smooth consistency that produces small but noticeable legs when swirled in a glass.  The nose on this tequila is very alcoholic with a touch of caramelized sugar and herbal notes. The taste follows suit: It combines a little bit of caramel with agave notes, oak, and alcohol. The agave, while not as pronounced as it is in other, premium tequilas, imparts a slightly herbal, plant- like taste. The requila finishes strong, but not too bitter. The alcoholic strength is 40 percent by volume (80 proof).

I don't consume many mixed drinks and I don't drink many shots of liquor. However, there are always going to be exceptions and one type of liquor that is a big exception for me is tequila. I have never liked the taste of tequila very much and it is unusual that I order any mixed drink made with tequila.  Premium tequilas are certainly worth the occasional splurge, but if cash is tight or if I am making drinks to give away to party guests, chances are I will stick with one of the less expensive brands and among them, Sauza Gold Tequila is one that I purchase with a good deal of frequency.

Sauza Gold Tequila isn't anything special, but its taste is acceptable. However, the main reason to go with Sauza Gold Tequila is the price. There are very few tequila products that sell for a price this low (about $15 per 750 ml bottle) and yet still taste good enough that they won't gag those with sensitive palates. As much as I don't prefer the taste of tequlia, I have learned one important lesson: Unlike vodka and a few other types of liquor, you cannot settle for tequila priced at the low end of the cost scale. These super- cheap tequilas (less than $10 per bottle) are often so nasty that even a sweet, fruity mixer cannot mask the repulsiveness. Sauza Gold Tequila is acceptable because it offers a low price with a taste that doesn't reach the level of downright nastiness. Its taste is similar to other medium- to- budget priced brands, but it is a little smoother than most of the less expensive brands and it leaves a fairly plesant aftertaste that combines a little bit of agave with sugar, oak, and burnt caramel.

Bottom Line Viewpoint:

Sauza Gold Tequila isn't a great tasting tequila and those with discerning tastes will likely want to reject it outright due to the less pronounced flavor of agave. However, when money is tight and a bottle of tequila is necessary for your next margarita, Sauza Gold Tequila is a good brand to consider. It may not taste as good as some of the higher- priced brands, but it also won't set you back $50 for a single bottle and its taste is smooth enough and agreeable enough to satisfy less finicky consumers.
