I actually have the 2004 model of this car. However, the same information applies.
My dad wanted me to have a safe and reliable car - no bells & whistles, so to speak, just safety and reliability. My previous car was a 1995 used plymouth neon that died on me several times and leaked oil like it was going out of style. So, my next car had to be something that wouldn't die like that one did.
I <3 my Saturn. The only negative thing about it is that it's just a little on the dull side - nothing special. I know they aren't made to be exciting in that way, but it almost makes you feel older driving the car b/c it's so dull! :-)
Anyway, my sister and I did a road trip all the way from Detroit, MI to Seattle, WA in the Saturn Ion, and we did not have a single (car-related) problem, even through the mountainous and curvy roads. If you can drive 2500 miles across country with no issues, you know it's a great car.
I'd definitely recommend it -- and ONSTAR -- to a friend. Onstar has saved my life with directions many a time - and a jump when I left my lights on (oops) and my battery died.
GREAT car! :-)
