Saturn Aura - 2007 —

I had a chance to drive my brother's 2007 Saturn Aura a couple days ago and I was impressed. It's a comfortable car with a powerful engine that makes it feel fairly sporty. In addition to being impressed with the sporty engine, I thought the six-speed automatic transmission was excellent. My brother paid about $27,500 for his Aura and it has about 23,000 miles on it.

First things first, however. The 2007 Aura my brother has is a four-door sedan with a 3.6-liter 252-horsepower six-cylinder engine. This is mated to a smooth six-speed automatic transmission that can either be placed into "Drive" like all other automatics or controlled by "paddle" shifters on the steering wheel. Either way, the engine was powerful and the transmission was silky smooth, both good things. By the way, the Aura has a steel body and does not use plastic body panels as many previous Saturns did. In other words, your Aura is subject to parking lot dings, just like any other car.

The driver's seat was comfortable but the seat's leather was slippery. I actually slid around a little when I punched the car through a curve. The car's ride was supple and comfortable, and less sporty than I would have liked. The peppy engine made up for this some and the overall package was sporty, although a firmer suspension would be more to my liking. One surprising downside: The armrests are hard plastic with no padding at all. It wasn't uncomfortable but it wasn't as nice as the rest of the car.

The Aura was filled with electronic toys, including XM Radio and OnStar. The sound system was excellent and music sounded great. All basic driving controls were easy to reach and visibility on my 30-minute drive was fine. The headlights did a good job of lighting the road.

My brother has not had any repairs over the 23,000 miles he's put on the car, and he gets about 22 miles per gallon in mixed driving. That's not terrible but it's not great, either. Chalk that up to the peppy engine that encourages a firm right foot on the go-fast pedal.

The 2007 Saturn Aura is a fine car with a nice engine/transmission combo. It is peppy and affordable, particularly when compared to its European and most Japanese competition. I personally prefer a ride that's a notch firmer but could see myself owning this car... particularly for the price.

Thank you both for the very nice comments! Yes, this was a fine car... I hope it steals some sales from Audi, Infiniti and Lexus.

Saturn has finally grown up and become a world-class car brand. I like the Aura—at least the exterior is eye-catching. Great review as always…

I got an Aura as a rental drive from Enterprise and was quite surprised at how competent the car was compared to the often disappointing Ions and earlier SL models that I'd driven from Saturn...although I find the styling and appointments a bit unremarkable, I agree, it's quite a decent car and one that drives as well as the Japanese sedans that seem to dominate the mid-size sedan market.
