Anyone who has experienced fatigue, vertigo, balance and mobility problems knows that it's always helpful to have a little strong support.  My husband, of course, is my main source of support (thanks, big guy!), but sometimes I need something extra when MS-related fatigue sets in.  The Extend A Hand Grab Bar is a locking extension grab bar that assists you in the home and can significantly reduce your risk of falling.

The typical and conventional grab bar is usually placed one-and-a-half inches off the wall, making it difficult to reach.  In contrast, Extend A Hand is designed with a 12-inch extension that locks into place and is much easier to reach.  If I hold onto it with both hands, I can use it as leverage to lift myself easily.

My hubby mounted the grab bar directly to the existing studs in my bathroom.  Once this baby is installed in a stud, trust me, it's not going to give way.  Mine was installed near the toilet area, but you can mount this anywhere in your home that would be useful.  For example, if you need help getting out of a slippery tub, or descending a stair into your garage, simply lift the grab bar and the unit will automatically lock into position. After use, just press the buttons and the Extend A Hand easily folds out of the way.  If you prefer, you can always just leave the bar in the locked position.

My only caveat about the product is that it really needs to be positioned well in order to be useful.  It's more useful near the toilet area if you have a wall close enough - and directly in front of you - where you can mount the bar.  It just doesn't seem to work as well if it's mounted on the side of the toilet.

The Extend A Hand Grab Bar comes in three standard sizes: 16"x12", 24"x12", and 32"x12." in two finishes: White and Stainless Steel.   The  product is U.S. designed, manufactured and patented, which is a rarity these days.

Prices vary depending on the end product's size and finish ($74 to $147), but they are competitive with other high-quality assistance grab bars.  It's definitely worth the investment to anyone at serious risk of falling.

I have major back problems and our basement steps are steep and the turn into the laundry area and/or the garage area...well...suffice it to say you almost have to be a contortionist to turn either way. However, if you turn to the right there is a handrail, but if you turn to the left you're own your own sweetcakes! So, thanks for the hands up on this one...maybe if I'm a good girl, once hubby gets over his quadruple bypass surgery he'll get me one.

Several years ago my brother installed a grab bar by the tub for my father who had Parkinson's disease. Now it comes in handy for me as sometimes I have trouble.
