SanDisk - Sansa m240 (1 GB) MP3 Player — 

My son is 12 - prime age for the tech gimmies. With his 12th birthday rapidly approaching, I knew he really had his heart set on an MP3 player. Any kind, he said, as long as it had a screen. I was mildly depressed by the size and quality that was available in stores that would still fit our budget. Imagine my delight when I found this lovely player on sale at Woot! for only $13 plus shipping one day during a Woot!Off. (This is a refurb, but it works perfectly.)

First of all, it's the perfect size for a young person. It fits right in the palm of his hand comfortably. It's 1 Gig of internal memory (no expansion available) and that should be plenty for a pre-teen - especially mine, who pretty much only likes classical music and theme songs from video games.

Our package included a clear plastic protective cover that includes a loop that will snap over belt loops, an arm band and a pair of earbuds. The ear buds wore out after just two months of use, but those thin wires in just about any buds will die quickly with enough use.

The player itself also has several other functions, including FM radio, voice recorder and (of all things!) a stopwatch. My son very quickly learned how to use all of the programming - it's just plug and play, there is no dedicated software required. He has all of his music arranged just the way he likes it. He uses it almost every day and is completely thrilled with it.

If you can find a good deal on one of these, go for it - you won't be disappointed!

Great find! My boys are a little older - 15 and 17. They do love the gadgets for sure. Let me know if you find good earphones. I need to replace the ones for my older son.
