San Juan, Puerto Rico Review Summary

One of the Caribbean’s largest cities, San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and an important tourist center. Reviewers who have visited San Juan like its many beautiful areas and its tropical location, not to mention its close vicinity to wonderful beaches. Also, since Puerto Rico is part of the United States, a passport is not needed for Americans to visit, making it convenient for those without this documentation. San Juan, Puerto Rico is “Such a Beautiful Island”, but other reviewers offer a completely different opinion, like one who said San Juan offers “Some Pretty Areas, but We Have no Plans to Go Back”. Among the negative aspects of a San Juan visit, reviewers point out the litter, stray dogs, and unsafe parts of town. Add everything together and you have a Vacation Destination that receives mixed reviews and may not rate highly with all who visit.

My husband and I were recently married and went to San Juan, Puerto Rico for our honeymoon. We were drawn to Puerto Rico since it was a Carribean island and neither of us had been out of the country before, but also since it is a U.S. territory, you don't need a passport.

San Juan is beautiful. Lots...

My husband and I went on a cruise ship leaving out of San Juan, Puerto Rico.  We had decided to spend two nights before our cruise in San Juan and two nights on the other side of the island after returning from our cruise.  Our experiences on both sides of the island were less than impressive.

Old San Juan, as shown in the photo is a great place to visit. But San Juan itself has only enough to offer for a day trip. Puerto Rico in general is great for the novice traveler who has never been outside of their home town. Some of the great natural sites and activities are found in the "local" towns and areas of Puerto Rico, this prevents a problem for most travelers who are "scared" into remaining in the San Juan area. My suggestion for the experienced traveler heading here is to rent a car, be concious and safe but don't be scared away from exploring the island. The island is VERY small in... review »

San Juan was a nice little get away. I went down with a few friends in January. The weather was nice, about an average of 80F everyday. The people were very friendly. Most of them spoke english but the ones who only spoke spanish were stil so nice and tried their best to help you. If you needed to cross the road, the second you step up to the sidewalk the cars would just stop!!! Not like the impatient roadragers from home!  Although most of the places we went to looked impoverish like it was still nice when you got to think of the historical parts. Old San Juan was beautiful! Just so amazing.... review »
