Samsung - SGH-A737 Cell Phone —

When my husband's cell phone broke, it was stressful.  We were not in a position to buy anything new and in order to be available for job search, my husband has to have a cell phone.

Our son's cell phone broke the previous week and he had to find another one- equally financially challenged.  I sent him to Sam's Club and he came home with the coolest phone I have ever seen- the Samsung A737 Slide Phone.

WHAT IS THE SAMSUNG A737 SLIDE PHONE LIKE?

Because we are all very hard on cell phones, we need something sturdy, yet practical.  I am not a person to like gadgets when it comes to cell phones.  I want plain and simple.  I want easy to use.  I want practical with longevity.

My first impression of the SAMSUNG A737 slide phone was the sleekness and streamlined appearance.  The slide phone is a flat phone of 1 3/4" x 3 3/4" in size.  There is a ridge just below the screen which you use your thumb on to slide the phone upward, exposing a lightup keypad.

SCREEN

The screen is very large 1 1/4"x 1 5/8" in size.  The resolution is very good- and the picture is clear.  It is high color.

EDGE BUTTONS (all buttons lock when phone is closed)

As you look at the face of the phone rightside up, the left side has the volume button - a slim silver button which is easy to press.  On the right side is a flat button that you press for instant access to basic functions which appear at a bar across the bottom of the screen which you can scroll from left to right.

The bar at the bottom of the screen has the following icons

  • calling
  • messaging
  • media net
  • music player
  • games and apps
  • end it all (the bar being there with a little humor)
FACE OF PHONE

The earphone at the top of the SAMSUNG A737 is a large rectangular piece about 3/4" long in contrast to the tiny 1/4 inch earphone on my last phone which was the NOKIA 6102B.

On the bottom under the screen of the SAMSUNG A737 slider phone is a round disc bar with an AT&T button in the middle- just like the MP3 player style disc control.

On the LEFT are three buttons

  • - (for pressing individualized commands from the screen)
  • musical notes(music - this is also an MP3 player)
  • green phone (to dial a phone number)

On the RIGHT are three buttons

  • - (individualized screen commands)
  • C (clear and back up as well as calendar)
  • red phone (hanging up)
Just below the screen is a raised bar which is hard to see.  This bar is for pushing against with your thumb to slide the keyboard out from under the screen of the phone.

KEYPAD

When the keypad is not out of the phone, the entire phone locks up including the side buttons on the phone.  I LOVE this feature.  This is wonderful as my NOKIA 6102B used to drive me up the wall with its constant volume changes due to buttons being pushed when stored in my purse or pocket.  It is easy to unlock quickly to talk without the keyboard extended which I love too.

The keypad lights up with a white light.  The numbers are large, and the letters are easy to read.  The keypad itself is sealed buttons with an overlay like what you find on many microwaves and stoves- no cracks to get junk jammed down into.

The buttons are very easy to push, and  have had no problems with them, despite long fingernails.

MENU
If you press the menu button, you get the following choices laid out in a 3 by 3 item grid. Listed from left to right

  • AT&T Music
  • Messaging
  • Recent Calls
  • Media Net
  • AT&T Mall
  • Cellular Video
  • My Stuff
  • Address Book
  • Settings
OPTIONS
If you press the options side of the screen button, you get lines of the following
Camera
Set Sound Profile
Bluetooth
Alarms
Empty (9 of these slots)

WALLPAPER

The wallpaper choices given with the SAMSUNG A737 Slidephone are not great.  However, you can put your own wallpaper up very easily.  I find that taking a photo of my kids and putting them on there helps me identify my phone easily and keeps me smiling.

CUSTOMIZED RINGTONES
You have the option of downloading any ringtones you want to with this phone, but you also can record your own if you like.   My son loves doing this!  What is really fun is recording each person's voice telling you to answer the phone or other crazy message and then assigning that particular ringtone to their phone number so that when they call, they are actually telling you that they are calling!

BLUETOOTH
This phone works really well with bluetooth.  The sound is clear and the headset hones in very well on the signal so far.

RECHARGING
Because this phone has many features, you can count on having to recharge this more often than older NOKIA phones.  With my NOKIA 6102B I could go without charging for almost a week if I did not use it much.  With the SAMSUNG A737, I have to recharge it every three or four days unless I use it constantly.  However, I have not gone without using it much because the phone is so easy and fun to use, so I can not say how much stand by time I will get with it.

WHAT COMES IN THE BOX OF THE SAMSUNG A737 SLIDE PHONE?

This phone comes with a standard lithium ion battery and an A/C travel adapter.  The adapter is sideways so you can plug in other things in outlets next to it very easily.

The attachment to the phone is like a tiny USB adapter, and not a round fragile post.  The receptacle on the phone is covered with a rather flimsy rubbery cover that is attached to the phone.  It rotates out of the way and then back to cover the connector when you are done recharging.  This is the only part of the phone I am skeptical about.

OTHER SUNDRY THINGS THAT ARE INTERESTING ABOUT THIS PHONE

There is so much to talk about with this phone that I could take all day telling you about it.  However, here are just a few other features of this phone that I have not had much chance to use or I will probably not use.  However, you might be interested to know that it has these features:

  • High Speed Data Access
  • AT&T Mobile Music
  • Camcorder
  • Video Share
  • Stereo Bluetooth Capable
  • Instant Messaging
  • Mobile Email
  • 1.3 megapixel camera (no flash, but takes decent photos)
  • Speakerphone
  • Web Browser
  • Alarms
  • Micro SD slot for uploading files from your computer- or downloading photos from your phone
MY COMMENTS

Again, there is so much you can do with this phone that I could take hours to tell you all about what I know about this phone, and lots more time once I find more I can do with it.  I am not a gadget person when it comes to phones.  I don't like phones that are cluttered with all kinds of junk on them.

My NOKIA 6102B flip phone had lots of features, but they were so annoying to get at, that I never used any of them.  I really did not like the difficulty it took to get where I needed to be with that phone.

With the SAMSUNG A737 phone, the story is completely different.  I find that this phone is so easy to use that it just lures me in to try new and different things.  The set up is completely intuitive and EXTREMELY easy to use and navigate.  It is set up logically and makes it easy to get anywhere you need to get FAST.

The colors on this phone are so much fun- I am especially enamored with the ability to change the size and colors of the fonts on the phone.  I can actually use VERY LARGE numbers on this phone and in RAINBOW COLORS!!!  You can set the numbers so that each one does different colors from the rainbow.

All of the settings on this phone are adjustable.  The screen stays lit for 10 seconds, but 5 of those seconds are dimmed so as not to wasted battery time.  You can change that to a various range of settings.

The size of fonts can be small or large.

When a message comes through there is a HUGE message which lets me know that it is there- I never miss messages anymore.  I LOVE that.

Also, individualized rings and photos is great- I can set different tones to different callers- along with their photos.  I took a photo of my husband (while sleeping) for his personalized ring, and I even had capability to change the photo with an artistic plug in like I would find in Corel PHOTOPAINT or Photoshop!!!!

This phone is a delight to use and have.  If you like color and easy to use things, this phone is a MUST have.  I can not gush about it enough.

Of course, my son's phone led us to explore this phone when my husband's phone died, so I ended up with one as well- the deal was so good at $20 each that we were thankful to find it.

I am not sure if I will still gush over this phone in the future, but for now, I could not be more thrilled.  I am used to the longevity of the Nokias that I have had in the past, as well as long life for battery, and this phone does have some people not too happy with the battery life.
