I looked at several washers, previously had a top loader that occasionally tore up clothes, so I really liked the idea of clothes falling freely through the water as the water and detergent cleaned them while passing through them - no agitation, no harsh encounters between the clothes and the machine.

This, is NOT that kind of washer. NO H.E. WASHER IS THAT KIND OF WASHER.  And that is unfortunate.

H.E. Washers work by making the clothes soggy-damp, then beating the crap out of them as they tumble back and forth.  Before having this samsung steamer, I had a Maytag. So help me, I didnt think the clothes were even completely damp - barely wet, and THAT was the wash cycle - just sloshing back and and forth.  This machine DOES get the clothes better than damp, but by no means do you SEE water in the machine during the wash cycle.  As a doctor, I just dont think you can sanitize clothes (or anything for that matter) without a decent amount of soap and water.

I have little doubt that the environmentally conscious folks are more than eager to give up cleaner clothes for the sake of saving 20 cents in water (I rent, I dont pay for water, so this means nothing to me). As for saving energy, my wash cycle lasts 3 hours; I cannot see how this uses less energy (I do not use the short cycles because I just dont believe they work at getting the clothes well cleaned.)

My solution: I'm going to go out to a used dealer and find an older front loading machine, before the government mandated these HE washers in January of 2007. I just dont think they work as well.

In response to clkonlyone's comment from Oct 4, 2009 at 2:49AM:

we're all entitled to our opinions, though there were some probs with your statement: "clothes sitting in "buckets" of water just leads to bacteria and mold growth"

First, with more water, there was also more agitation, so clothes didnt just sit there (which is actually my POINT - the clothes passed through the water, continuously, which cleaned them. Second, mold/fungus takes 20-30 hours of continuous water exposure in order to grow.

I just dont think the machines work that well or that efficiently (in matters of efficiency important to me) - water in illinois is not a problem (and def not for a renter) - even if electricity were the same (and my bills have not shown this) - I do not like waiting 2-3 hours on a cyclen(the basic cycle lasts 2 hours) - so, ironically, my clothes often DO sit damp after a wash for a few hours (while I run errands) - and grow bacteria, since I cannot wait around 2 hours for a basic washload to complete.
This is a review site, and I gave my honest review; my apologies to the Green people if the review was not what you like

You are living in the past, as a Doctor you should be aware of the leading technologies regarding sanitation and sanitization. your clothes sitting in "buckets" of water just leads to bacteria and mold growth. The longer wash cycles arent neccessary to get the job done either, although with your mind set I am sure no one would ever convince you otherwise.
