After having three cellphones within a year destroyed in some way by our very adventurous, and very sneaky, toddler, my husband decided to get me this phone in the hopes that it might make it for more than a couple months. At first, I was disappointed that there weren't more bells and whistles for the price we paid for the phone.

Truth be told, this phone is worth every penny if you have small, adventurous children or you happen to be quite clumsy. This phone has been dropped from every height, dunked in the toilet, stepped on, sat on, thrown against a wall... Basically, you name it and it has happened.

And it STILL works beautifully. Had we bought a cheaper, less durable phone, we would have probably had to replace it ten times over in the past 18 months. Granted, this is not a nifty, high tech phone, but it does what it is supposed to do and, most importantly, it stands up to almost any abuse you put it through. My contract is coming up due in a couple months and I'm not sure I even want to change phones at this point.

The Rugby A837 Cell Phone is used in my office for communication with van drivers. We recently switched companies and purchased fourteen of these cell phones. We transport senior citizens to doctor appointments and need to stay in contact with our drivers on a regular basis. This phone has a couple positive things about it and some negative things. First, it is very sturdy and durable. The rugged design keeps it from breaking if it is accidently dropped. It has a large screen and the numbers show up rather well. It is easy to grip because of the rugid protection provided. The negative things include the fact that it only stores nine numbers in speed dial and we have fourteen phones in our system. Secondly, it is sometimes difficult to hear people on the other end of the phone. It is a bulky phone and has to be flipped open to be used instead. The speaker phone seems to come on rather easily and sometimes this is a pain because I don't want the person on speaker phone and I have to take the time to get it off. Overall, I would only recommend this phone for someone who has children or needs a sturdier phone that will not break easily.

Takes a licking keeps on ticking

By

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

Absolutely the most amazingly designed filp phone ever!!!! I had the phone closed, face up, and charging the battery on the electrical hook up at our most recent camping adventure. We were setting up camp when a torrential down pour came in from across the lake. For 20 minutes it sat in the pouring rain like this before I collected it up and dried it off. Still works like a champ. Not a single issue with phone since, and not a drop of water in the battery/SIM card/SD card area.

Performance
Phone functions like a champ despite the hoops it forces you through to complete simple tasks like opening the calculator, or setting the alarms. Web browsing is a chore at times.

Voice Quality
I've never had issues hearing the callers. The mic gets tinny when speakerphone is on.

Durability
I can't speak highly enough about the quality of this phone's design. The UI could be more intuitive, but the rugged durability of this phone far outweighs any of the cons to the software.

I smashed my phone months ago, and it still works without issue!

By

from Corona, CA

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

I have three children, and as babies, each one of them has found my phone to be a most exciting teething toy.  Only one of these phones has continued to operate after being attacked by drool...the Samsung Rugby!

Even without the help of my children, I'm hard on cell phones.  I'm constantly dropping my phone, losing it, spilling things on it...you name it, my phone has endured it.  My Rugby actually made it's way under my recliner-rocker, and I didn't know it was there until I heard, "Craaack!" from underneath the chair.  The front display screen got a large crack in it, and a piecce of the clear plastic is now missing, but six months later, it has not caused any problems.  When my baby got to my phone and baptised it in drool, I thought for sure it was a gonner, especially because of the crack.  I haven't had a single problem.  Even the screen under the crack still works perfectly!

I know that Samsung supposedly built this phone to military specs, but I'm fglad that they also had me in mind!

Samsung Rugby is a Tough, Heavy Phone

By

from Jenks, OK

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

I need a phone that I can abuse and that will always make/receive calls and that has a loud speaker.  I don't text; I don't surf the 'net on my phone; I don't use my phone as a music player; I don't use my phone as a camera.  I want real buttons to push when I call, not those flat numbers painted on a smooth surface.

The Samsung Rugby has reliably made and received calls for the last year.  It has real buttons and allows me to speed dial up to 9 programmed numbers.  It has a nice, loud speaker.  Its case is durable and tough.  It's also pretty cute, in my opinion, as I chose the yellow model.

I understand it has a push-to-talk feature that is supposed to work like a walkie talkie with another Rugby.  I was disappointed to find out (after I'd purchased it) that this only works using the "text" message technology on your phone.  So, although you talk into the phone, it uses your text minutes, which I have had shut off at my provider.

The phone also is supposed to have a GPS feature, a camera, and shoots video.  I don't use any of these features.  It is a heavy phone, which I do not like, but like with in exchange for its durability.  It is also a flip phone and folds out to a nice length when you talk.  It suits me.

Rugged Phone

By

from Henderson, KY

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

When all my friends started buying these phones I just knew i had to have one. I loved the yellow and black phone and thats the one I picked. When you hold the phone you can tell it is made to last. It is rubberized on the sides and has a large speaker on the front. The speaker is VERY loud, one of the loudest phones i have seen. I have droped this phone several times and never worried about it. It has been rained on, droped in the sink and at first I freak out but then i remeber its a rugby. No Worries! This phone is a must for someone who is rough on phones or has a job outdoors and has to have a cell phone. The battery life is very good, it will last at least 3 to 4 days on standby and texting. The camera is ok,not the best but it works. The menu area of the phone can be confusing, it took me forever to figure out how to change ring tones for people in my address book. It's also a good phone for texting, the keys are large and have bumps on them so you can "Feel" the keys.

Durable and easy to use, not just for construction workers

By

from Eagle Mountain, UT

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

I am a busy mother of three small children and decided on the Samsung Rugby for it's durability.  This was my most important feature, and I have been quite satisfied.  Although I haven't dropped it into water yet, the phone has certainly been dropped on pavement a number of times, thrown across a wood floor once and bitten extensively.

It is a so-called old fashioned flip phone, and my tech-savy husband says that it is 'lame', but that is why I like it. It is simple to use, the buttons are easy to access, I can hold the phone, flip it open and dial with one hand (since there's a baby in the other hand..HELLO!)

Admittedly this phone is not great for texting since you have to old-school scroll through all the letters.  But if you are looking for a practical useful phone that isn't going to break the first time it falls out of your purse/pocket, this is a great option.

One con is that to see the Time without opening the phone, you have to hold down the caller volume button on the outside..this is trickier than it sounds and there is a 4 second pause, which is annoying. Also it is bigger than a typical flip phone, it just barely fits in my jean pocket, and usually it ends up in my back pocket.

Oh, and I LOVE that it is yellow! I can totally see it at the bottom of my purse!

The Samsun SGH-a837 is a great rugged phone for a man.

By

from Talpa, TX

Comments about Samsung Rugby Cell Phone:

I purchased the Samsung SGH-a837 for my husband, who is a contractor, and is very rough on his phones.  He drops it at job-sites often and this rugged phone takes the abuse and keeps right on working.  We also live in the country and he does a lot of driving to and from work and it has been a reliable way to stay in contact with the world.  He is your basic phone man so many of the features he has never even attempted to use but it has so many available if he needs them. It has a GPS function, music capabilities, camera and video options should he ever need them.  Most functions are very easy for him to operate and he hates technical gadgets! The battery life is quite sufficient for our demands and the look and size of the phone are just right for him. It slips in his pocket easily and yet fits his hand well and is easy to grip with the rubber protector. He has never lost service on it and it works quite well in the country.  Easy and versatile!
