Samsung - M520 Cell Phone —
Samsung has done an excellent job with M520.
First of all you will notice that the phone is a slide-up model. The screen, although 176x220 in size is exceptionally large on this phone, and has very good quality and brightness.
On the front of the phone below the screen, you will notice the navigational pad, the Talk/End buttons, and the Speakerphone/Back buttons. When the phone is closed, these buttons are locked so that you don't accidentally start dialing while the phone is in your pocket.
Once you slide the phone up, the rest of the keypads are revealed, and all the buttons are unlocked. The act of sliding the phone up is very simple to do, and the phone even has a small indentation that allows for your thumb to "catch" on that in order to slide the phone in a fluid motion.
Other great features I love about the M520 are as followed:
The most important feature I love about the M520 is the ability to send applications to the background. This phone is limited on memory, but you are still able to multi task easily. While a program is open, simply hit the End button, and you will be given multiple options as how to close, or not close, the application. Sending a program to the background is quick and easy, and even easier to switch back to later. I have not had more than 3 programs running at once, so I honestly do not know how many apps can be running until you hit a memory limit.
Some programs such as the Sprint Music application work great while in "Background mode". Sending the Music program to the background will display a *Music Playing* message on your main home screen. The volume buttons on the side still control the volume of the music, and the quality of playing music is the same having the program active, as it is while in the background. The Music player is lacking a bit in features, but it does support playlists and grouping by artist/album/genre/etc.
The Micro-SD slot is great, and from what I've heard supports up to 4GB. I have only tried 2GB, so I can't say for sure. You are not able to load applications or games onto the Micro-SD card and run them, but for music and saving pictures to, the memory card is a nice feature that some phones such as the A900 from Samsung lacks.
The built in GPS is nice too. I installed the Garmin program which you do have to pay a monthly fee to use, and have had no problems with it, other than the voice navigation is a bit low in volume, even on the highest setting.
Pretty much any JRE2 game with the resolution of 176x220 works on this phone. I've never encountered an error with any that I've installed, so that is a plus.
The ringers still need to be purchased from Sprint, or uploaded to your phone over the air using third party uploading websites. Same goes with Screensavers (wallpapers) and Themes.
One subtle difference I've noticed on this phone that I really enjoy is the dark background when navigating the menus. I'm not sure if the default interface was made to save battery life, or just there to be different but I really like it compared to the usual white background with black text. The color scheme is very pleasing to the eyes whether you are in bright areas, or low-light situations.
Overall, this is an excellent phone with great features that I've noticed are missing on a few other top of the line Samsung phones. With Sprint's limited selection of "standout" phones, the M520 is deffinately one of them. It will certainly turn a few heads next time you are showing it off to your friends
