Sam's Letters to Jennifer  —

James Patterson is usally known for his thrillers, but he showed that he actually has a sensitive side in the book Sam's Letters to Jennifer.

Jennifer is a nearly middle aged woman who is still grieving over the death of her husband. Though her friends are telling her it is time to get herself back out there and start dating again; she doubts that she will have the strength to actually date. Jennifer feels that it is likely impossible that she will ever find love again.

Jennifer has one person left in her life that she loves dearly and that is her Grandmother Sam. To her dismay she gets a phone call that her Grandmother has fallen in to a Coma. The doctors are unsure if she will ever make it back to a normal life. Jennifer gets in her car immediately and heads to Lake Geneva, WI where her grandmother currently lives.

After she spends time at the hospital with her Grandmother she decides to go back to her Grandmother's house to get cleaned up and rest. While she is there she finds a large stack of letters that were meant for her. Sam had decided that she would write letters to Jennifer telling her about her life. The first letter describes how the letters are not only about her life but about Jennifer's as well, and Sam hopes that Jennifer will learn something about her self through reading about her Grandmother's life. She is instructed to read the letters over time, never reading more than a few at a time. And though Jennifer wants to keep reading, she does as she is instructed and only reads a few at a time.

During her stay in Lake Geneva she is re-united with a child hood friend by the name of Branden. Branden, is someone she played with as a child when she was visiting her Grandmother. They start out friendly enough and find that they are attracted to one another, and though Jennifer is scared of love, she finds that she can't help but fall for the fun loving Branden.

While Jennifer is dealing with the fact that her Grandmother may never wake up from her coma she soon finds out that even more pain is coming her way.

Throughout the story Sam's letters are a source of comfort and discovery for Jennifer.

My Thoughts

This is a beautiful story about a beautiful relationship between a woman and her grandmother.

The book is an extremely easy read, and the chapters are very short.  The book has sad moments and happy moments.  It also has love on many levels.  Sam's Letters to Jennifer is a touching book that shows that James Patterson really does have a soft side.  I really enjoyed Sam's Letters to Jennifer, and do recommend it.
