I spent a 4 day weekend in Salzburg when I was living in Munich, and I really enjoyed the visit.  It has the advantage of being close to other countries (as usual in Europe) and some beautiful mountains.

I felt that the historical center was nice, and I enjoyed seeing the churches and everything else in the old town.  We walked out to see some of the things made famous by the Sound of Music, but that was very, very touristy.

We also went to the Hellbrun palace.  It is a great place on a warm day.  There are tons of trick fountains, so pay attention!

We also took a cable car up into the mountains and did some walking up there, and we took a tour of the salt mines when the weather was crummy one day.

It is a really pretty area, but it is overpriced for what is there (saltmine was WAY over priced and so were the meals).  It was very touristy and wasn't as quaint as I had hoped.  A car is really necessary to be able to see a lot of the stuff (unless you want to go on a big group tour).  We walked a lot of places, but a lot of the things a car was necessary.

Overall, it is a nice place, and good for those who want the super American tourist visit of the Sound of Music.  For a short time in Europe, I wouldn't say that Salzburg is a must do.

I'm a Mozart fan so I've always wanted to go there. One day, one day. The trick fountains sound so cool! Welcome to Viewpoints!

Interesting perspective....I've always heard such very positive things about Salzburg. Can't wait to read some viewpoints on travel destinations you really recommend. See ya!
