With Tornado Season upon us here in Kansas I have added to the stuff that I keep in the Storm Shelter. One of my new additions is this 6 in 1 Personal Safety Device from Safety Cross. I found this at Walmart for $18 and for what it does it is well worth the price.

Safety Cross 6 in 1 Personal Safety Device

There are no batteries to replace or go bad in this nifty little gadget. You Crank the handle for 1 minute and it gives you 90 minutes of use. You can crank it either way on this so there is no remembering which way to crank in an emergency. It does hold a charge for a long time as I cranked it up over 72 hours ago and just tried it and it still had a charge in it! Let me go over the various functions of this thing for you.

1. Light Function

On top you have a light button that controls the light of course...lol The first press is a low beam light which in a dark room will show you the way but only if you go slow. This would be better as a night light. The second press give you a much brighter light and is great for navigating dark places. The third press gives you a Blinking Beam which could be used to signal for help.

It is the high beam of the second setting only it blinks and it is very bright. They say on their website that it can be seen up to 1/2 mile away. Now I did take it up the road here and pointed it toward the stop sign which is about 1/8 of a mile away and it lit up the stop sign to where I could see it!

2. Siren Function

This button is on the side and will blast a siren to call for help and at the same time it flashes the light on high beam. Now it is not that loud too me as I can sit here with it on and still hear the TV over the noise, but the light would be good for sending for help if you were trapped in say a storm shelter (Mine has a 12 inch Air Shaft on top) and the echo from the metal shelter would amplify the sound some. It is supposed to be 130 decibels and it does drive the dogs and cat nuts when I set it off. I think i is closer to 100 decibels as I have an alarm with a 130 decibel alarm and it is louder than this thing. Although it would probably drive you crazy at the same time when set off in an enclosed shelter. I did and it was a bit louder in there and I could only stand it for about 30 seconds before it started driving me nuts...lol Yeah I know not a far drive for me, just a short putt!

3. FM Radio

Now this would be great for getting important news if the electric is out or you're in the Storm Shelter needing to know what is going on. It has a Volume control as well as a scan button to get stations with. I just sat here and with the antenna up I got 21 radio stations with it. I also went in the storm shelter and with the antenna sticking up into the Air Shaft I still got the same number of stations. It also has a reset button to go back to the lowest station on it. What I don't like about it is there is no indicator to let you know what station you're on. Not a big deal but still a slght fault as knowing what station you're on would be nice.

4. Cell Phone Charger

Here is a nice feature as you can recharge your Cell Phone with this thing. What is lacking though is the Cell Phones it will charge. It comes with a Nokia adapter and you can order others from their website for just the Shipping Charges. However it does not have mine available! So this one will not do me any good at all.

5. Compass

On top of the crank handle is a compass which is supposed to help you find your way to safety should you get lost. My complaint about this is that it is not very accurate at all! I can get 2 or 3 different direction readings by turning the thing! So I would not rely on this feature at all. I can sit here in my chair and the west wall of the house will read 2 or 3 different ways depending on how I am holding it.

6. Signal Flasher

I listed this under light function but they list it separately? Anyway this is the third push of the light button or also when you use the siren. I already spoke of it in the light function so I will stop here...lol

Bottom Line

This would come in handy anywhere such as your car, camping, hiking or in an electrical outage at home. In an emergency it could be a life saver and that was my purpose for buying it in the first place. Their site lists this for $34.95 but I got it at Walmart for $18. The ability to crank it for it to work is a great idea and I don't have to worry about dead batteries.

With the compass not working like it should, I will have to knock off 1 star. This is however a real good thing to have around in case of emergency so I still feel my money was well spent. The siren does echo inside the Storm Shelter and being outside I can hear it 50 yards away with no problem. So if for some reason we got trapped in the Shelter someone outside would hear it!

Yep for that it would have to be concrete, have a potty and I would still be scared to death if I had too use it!

I would like a bomb shelter. We live 4 miles from a nuclear power plant (: I would like one like we looked at in the 60s. My parents and our neighbors went to a store (I did too) and we were going to put one in. Jo

Wonder if they have crank-powered little fridges to chill your brewskis in the event of an emergency...

I'm not giving up on my cane which has some of those features but this gadget sounds like an awfully good idea, especially the radio part. Thanks for sharing!

I thought that first sentence said it was "tomato season." Teehee. You can imagine I was confused. I got it the second time. Read it thinking tomoatoes, and you will have to smile though.
