18 Month Old Broke Through These

4

I purchased these Safety 1st multi-purpose straps for many different uses and reasons. I used one on my garbage can because my children under 1 were constantly trying to dig through it. I also put one of my refrigerator when my son decided he wanted to be in there all day getting himself something to eat and drink which almost always ended in a mess. They worked for a while but eventually my son broke through the refrigerator one. For a product that is supposed to keep my child safe I couldn't believe he was able to break through it at the age of only 18 months. *Please note that my son has always been extremely strong and larger for his age so this may not be the case for every one. Basically he was able to pull the grooved strap right out of the 'holder' end. The one I had on the garbage can lasted around a year and a half. This one broke on its own. The strap became brittle over time from being bent back and eventually cracked right off. Effectiveness These are effective for a short fix but I was not able to use them longer than 18 months before they broke on their own or were broke by my child. Ease of Use The multi-purpose strap is definitely easy to use. It has strong tape adhesive that does its job at keeping both ends glued down. There is a button that you press to release the strap and can easily be done by an adult with one hand.

Love these

I have one of these on my refrigerator and microwave to help keep my three year old out. I love that I can place them anywhere that I want to. Makes it super easy because on my refrigerator I have it placed at the very top. Even if he pushed a chair in front of it I don't think he would be able to open it. The design also blends in very well I think with the appliances. Especially since the strap is clear. I wish more proofing items would come in clear. The only issue I have is that I have had to replace the strap on the refrigerator one once. It broke after a couple months because people kept accidentally closing it in the door. We have a french door unit so I think it made it easier for it to get closed in the door. But I only had to change out the strap. I did not have to re-install the whole unit which I was very pleased about. So I think it would be nice if the strap was more durable.

Has some nice features, but they doesn't stick well

I bought these straps to keep the drawers in my sewing cabinet closed and out-of-reach of my daughters' small fingers. They worked great for a while. They looked nice, first of all. I liked that they are fairly slim and don't really draw as much attention as many other baby locks do. I also like that they are easy to use (for me, but not for my daughters). You can really operate them with one hand - just pinch the sides and pull off to unlock. The main problem, though, is that after a few months, the adhesive on the pieces wore off and they started popping off the cabinet. At first, I could stick them back on and get a little more use out of them. After a while, they just popped off all the time, and therefore no longer did their job. I had to replaced them, and since I couldn't find another brand that worked like these, I re-bought this same brand. I plan on having to replace them again, though, which is sort of frustrating.

Safety 1st Adjustable Strap not so great.

I've tried this twice for my fridge door and I had no luck. Both times the adhesive didn't hold for longer than a few days. My son at the tender age of 18 months has a tendancy to get into the fridge and pull out yogurts to have a little snack and I was hoping these straps would help me keep him out of the fridge while I'm cooking without me having to keep redirecting him. No luck! These days keeping kids safe seems to be a job in and of itself. Usually I like Safety 1st items but sometimes there is a dud. The price is good though if you can get it to stick to your surfaces. I did wipe the surface down before using the product as directed so it must have just been the texture of my fridge surface or something. Oh well, not everything can be a winner. I would recommend this product but not for kitchen appliances, maybe for plastic drawers instead. I think they should change the adhesive on the product.

This Safety 1st Strap failed in the first two weeks

I was excited to be able to keep my son out of the refrigerator when I saw these straps.  I bought one for the refrigerator and one for the chemical cabinet, since we are renting and I didn't want to put anything permanent in if I didn't have too.  The refigerator one came off in the first week- my husband and I both kept forgetting it was there and we were strong enought that it popped off every time we needed something out of the refrigerator.  It eventually stopped working, since it had been pulled off so many times.  It was not as easy to forget on the chemical cabinet, because it was at eye level.  It lasted a little bit longer, but my son eventually pulled it off enough times and now it no longer sticks.  It only lasted a couple of months on the chemical cabinet, and even before that time was up he was able to get into the cabinet every once in a while  I ended up having to purchase the better grade cabinet locks and do something permanent after all.

FINALLY, something that worked

These straps are the BEST.  My daughter was like a safety-proofing Houdini.  Everything we put on to protect her she either figured out or ripped off, but not these. You HAVE to let the adhesive settle before you even let your child pull on them or anything, but once they're on, they are on!  We moved from a rental house and it took me like ten minutes of working to get them off!  Annoying at the time, but looking back, I couldn't have asked for something safer to keep my daughter out of stuff.  And the GIANT plus side to these is they aren't extremely difficult to open.  We had some locks that kept my husband out of certain cabinets which is really counter-productive.  When we got our house we stocked up on them for all the cabinets in the kitchen and all the ones in the bathroom.  They work AWESOME on draws and cabinets and fireplace doors- everything.  I buy them for every baby shower that I go to- you can never have enough safety for your baby!

Safety 1st Adjustable Strap works great

5

I have read a ton of bad reviews on the Safety 1st Adjustable Straps and I honestly don't understand.  I have had one installed on our Kitchen trashcan for about a year and it works great.  Soon after I applied it (a month or so) the adhesive gave way but it wasn't anything a little double sided sticky tape couldn't solve.  It keeps my 1 yr old out of the trash and its 'easy' enough to open that my 3 yr old can unlock it.  My 1 yr old even likes to walk up the trashcan and replace the lock if I've forgotten.  If that's not convenient and easy to use I don't know what is!

great idea but lacks adhesive

When my son became mobile, I realized that I needed to baby-proof the house. Okay, actually it took me a while after that to finally baby-proof because I waited until there was a problem. I went to the store and looking at what safety devices they had, I was excited when I saw the **Safety 1st Multi-Purpose Adjustable Strap**. It looked simple to use and was just what I needed to keep my fridge closed off from my very curious child (this is really the only thing he gets into). Set-up was easy and basically stick-stick-snap. Just as promised, the **Safety 1st Multi-Purpose Adjustable Strap **kept my son out of what I wanted him out of. The problem is that now I need to replace it because it cannot keep me and older children out of the fridge. The second day I had it up my friend came over with her 3 year old daughter. Right after my friend was talking about what a neat idea it was and how she should get some, her daughter went right over to the fridge and opened it - the adhesive came undone. I stuck it right back and it still held for my now 17 month old son, it never held for the 3 year old (or me when I forget to unclick it) and now needs to be replaced only a few months later. Forunately it came with another one in the pack so I do not have to spend anymore money, but we will see how long thi sone lasts.

Don't waste your money on these adjustable Saftey 1st straps.

I was excited to find these adjustable straps because I was at a loss as to how to baby proof my kitchen sink.  It is a retro metal cabinet with odd handles so traditional cabinet locks just were not going to work.  The Safety First latches came with adhesive disks and it was very easy to stick them on and adjust the straps.  They seemed to work great at first although unlatching them was a two had job even for an adult.  Unfortunately the first time my little explorer came up against these latches she simply tore the latch off the adhesive pads and was the able to open the cabinet door.  So much for baby proofed.  So I resorted to moving my cleaning supplies to another cabinet that was able to be baby-proofed.  I must however say that the adhesive disks left behind on the cabinet doors were very easy to get off and didn't ruin the paint job on the cabinets.  Save your money these are duds.
