I was always seeing the commercials for SoyJoy on TV and thought that it looked like a product I wanted to try. I'm pretty health-conscious, and am always on the lookout for healthy snacks that didn't take the joy out of snacking. I was at my friendly neighborhood Walgreen's and saw that SoyJoy was on sale 2 for $1. I purchased two bars and went on my way. I soon found out the real reason why they were on sale ...
SoyJoy is no joy at all. They are packaged attractively - wrapped in foil with bright colors - but once you open the package, the attraction ends. The bar is small and rectangular in shape, weighing only 1.06 oz. It was dark brown, burnt-looking, with a sort of cookie-like texture. There were bits of fruit in it, but it didn't in any way start to make my mouth water. The smell wasn't very appealing, either. I thought that maybe the reality of the taste had to be better than the outside, so I took my first bite. It was a little bit like eating chewy cardboard with bits of fruit. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I finished the bar, but I'm not sure that I will eat the second one that I bought. I also took a look at the nutritional content, and for as small as one bar of SoyJoy is, I don't think that it really is all that great. I had the Berry flavor, and it has 4.5 total grams of fat (with 2 being saturated fat), 130 calories, and 15 mg of cholesterol. All THAT was in a bar that is just as long as an ink pen and maybe about as wide as two pens combined! On the plus side, it did have 12% of your daily recommended value of dietary fiber, seemed to have natural ingredients, and was a decent source of potassium (but you can also eat a banana for these things - I would). Sorry SoyJoy, I think that I will have to look for another more joyful snack.
