When it comes to storing food products for an extended period of time, I don't think that there is a better brand out there than Ziploc. They produce high quality storage tools that help to keep your food fresher for a longer period of time. It is easy to think that they are all made the same, but I think that Ziploc works better, and tends to last a lot longer than some other brands I have used. The specific product that I am reviewing from Ziploc today, is the Ziploc Freezer Bags with the FreezeGuard Seal. They are bags which you place food in, and then store in the freezer for a period of time specified by you.
These Ziploc Freezer Bags are purchased by us in a Economy Pack, which hold 63 of the storage bags. Each one of the bags will hold one quart of food, so you have plenty of space to move around in there. They also offer bags that will hold a gallon, and those could be as useful for a family to use as these ones. The difference only exists in the size of the product, as they perform basically the same job duties. Those ones will probably be found right next to these on the shelf, and it is up to the buyer to decide just how much space you are going to need. Knowing that I will not always need a lot of room in a freezer bag, I tend to go with these ones. I do use the gallon size as well, but I use them in my fridge for left-over pizza. Not a designed use, but it keeps the pizza really, really fresh in my opinion.
There are a few main selling points that make the Ziploc with FreezeGuard a likely choice as some of the best in the market. First of all, the top is made a little taller, so that it is easier to "grasp and open" as the box puts it. At the top of each bag are ridges between the edge and the zipper, which make it easy to hold when you are trying to open it. This keeps it from getting slippery when wet as well, and just makes life a lot easier for use. Below that "taller top" is the zipper of the bag, which serves as the sealer for the bags. It is very easy to use, and by simply sliding your fingers on opposite sides along the duration of the zipper, you will cause it to seal very tightly. It is just as easy to pull it apart when you are ready, by grasping part of the top piece of the bags.
Just below the zipper of the bags, you have some reinforced plastic that is going to strengthen the seal, and provide a sturdiness to the bag itself. This is really cool, because it makes it stronger, so that if you are pulling hard to open the bag, there is less risk of it tearing, or causing a leak which will let air into the bag. These are just a few of the nice little advantages of these bags, because they are really built to last. And last they do, because even if you happen to drop the bag (even with contents enclosed) there is not a good chance of it breaking open. I know I have done this a couple of times, and though my heart stopped each time I did, the floor didn't pop open the bags. To put it mildly, this is a very safe product that works really well with your hands.
The most important part of the Ziploc Freezer Bags is of course going to be how well it works in the freezer itself. You want a bag that is going to hold up to the harsh cold, and provide protection against any type of freezer burn. Well I am here to tell you that these Ziploc bags work as well as you could possibly hope. They stand up to the cold, and provide a nice freshness to anything you are storing in the freezer. Your only problem is going to be remembering how long the food has been in there yourself, because you won't be able to tell from its condition. The bags do a great service to anything that you put in them, and I think that any new user will be pleasantly surprised with just how well they work.
Ziploc Freezer Bags can be purchased just about anywhere. These ones are sold at both Shopko and Safeway in town, but I have seen them in many other grocery stores, as well as stores like Walmart. The prices will vary depending on how many you get; A 20 pack will probably run you about $2.50, while the 63 pack cost us $4.79. You can purchase as many as you want, knowing that you will be able to depend on them for a long use each time. They do advertise that they can be heated up in the microwave (while open), but I have never been brave enough to try that. I would just recommend pouring the contents out before doing that. Regardless of how you reheat your food, just know that these bags will keep it in excellent condition until you are ready to use it. I highly recommend the Ziploc Freezer Bags with the FreezeGuard, and if you store a lot of food in your freezer, I would highly recommend picking some up.
