After years of holding out, I've finally convinced my Aunts and Uncles to upgrade their PC's and abandon dial-up service for something faster. The best deal in their neighborhood was SBCGlobal, $25 versus $45 for Comcast. Since day one (two years ago) it's been slow, and it's only gotten slower with time. I've had their lines tested, and everything is clear. I recently called SBCGlobal to complain and was given an old-fashioned explanation about "too many cars on the information superhighway" and how "too many people in our neighborhood are on the node." It's so bad that I have watched my mother-in-law break into tears while trying to download pictures I've sent of her grandkids.
No matter the cost, stay away from SBCGlobal. Your time is too valuable to sit staring at a blank screen all day waiting for pages to load (or not). Shell out the extra green and get something that will improve your quality of life, not destroy it.
