Okay so maybe I am a bit late for Spring Cleaning but better late than never I always say. By now you have probably already cleaned your chimney of the creosote from the winter burning season with a good chimney brush, if not you really need to get it done. After I clean mine I always give my glass doors a real good cleaning too but not all of them will remove that creosote build up on your glass, you need a special cleaner or a lot of muscle...I prefer the easy way...lol

Rutland Fireplace and Hearth Cleaner

I picked this up at my local Tractor Supply Store but you can also get it online as well. I just take a good cotton cloth, a pail of warm water and my bottle of Rutland to get my fireplace doors nice and clean. You can go one of two ways here...you can either close one door and reach around to spray or spray it on a damp cloth. Either way works very well and it will also work on the frame around the glass. It is strong enough to get that sticky creosote off but gentle enough to clean the frame without scratching.

I prefer to do about half of the glass at a time and then rinse the cloth and wipe it down again. Once I am done with one side I rinse the cloth again and wipe clean. It takes a little pressure but it is not so hard that it ticks you off either...lol You may want to wear gloves as it will get your hands black but does wash off easy with a little scrubbing....lol

I wait until after I clean my chimney because otherwise your pretty doors will need to be cleaned again, so why clean twice! I also do a light cleaning during the winter if I burn any semi wet wood. A clean glass door will let more heat through so it is wise to keep them as clean as possible.

Bottom Line

Rutland Fireplace and Hearth Cleaner
will make your job of clean glass doors much easier and will let you enjoy your fireplace that much more. My bottle is 2 years old now and I still have about a 1/2 bottle left, so it doesn't take a lot to keep my fireplace looking nice. A 32. ounce bottle will run you about $5 so it won't break the bank either.

I am glad she found it, I know I was..... I remember the first time I used it...my wife told me to have fun scrubbing all day....When I put things away 10 minutes later she asked me why I gave up so soon....I told her I didn't give up but was finished she couldn't believe it...lol ;)

I believe she did some digging on the net and hit pay day.....the products she uses dont always get the job done so its always awesome when you find (by word of viewpoint) a good product that has been tested by the comsumer (Big RON)giving honest opinions from the ones that matter most.....the buyer :)!

I am betting it would, my daughter cleaned and I can't find my bottle but soon as I do I will do a test and see if it will work. I am certain it would as the fireplace doors are tempered glass and it works great on them. ;)

I was wondering the same thing? Windows? or the glass windows on my doors (windex just doesn't do it especially the back door) or what about storm doors? Could it work on that too? Look you got the ladies all wanting to go clean!

lol...I know I am still doing it. We had a bad storm blow through last night with 80mph straight line winds and I spent the day cleaning up broken tree limbs, repairing my fence, putting siding back on and setting 3 rose bushes back up that got blown down.....What a day!! ;)

LoveisJoy wrote on Jun 27, 2008 at 12:32PM

Trust me, it's never too late for Spring cleaning. :)

I haven't seen it at Walmart and rarely go to Target so that I couldn't tell ya. Ace Harware might have it but I am not sure. Now when she looks tell her to look careful because they also make one for Gas fireplaces but it is not as strong and might not clean a wood fireplace very well. You're Welcome Bro, glad I could help! ;)

I wouldn't see why not, especially if you need to get any deep grime off them like on basement or cellar windows. ;)

Yep and with this you don't take the risk of putting scratches in the glass either. ;)

Yes they are but this makes it much easier. It starts running down the glass right after you spray it. I believe you will like it a lot...;)

AnnaBanana wrote on Jun 27, 2008 at 9:39AM

You know about the greatest things! I wonder if this would work on windows too?

Buggheart wrote on Jun 27, 2008 at 9:02AM

oooh yeah, I need some of this too. Thanks for the info.

gitbean wrote on Jun 27, 2008 at 8:58AM

Passing this on to my sis....thanks Ron!!

I usually have good luck scraping my fireplace glass with a razor scraper. Of course, that throws ashy dust all over the place... Interesting stuff!
