My dog is not a little "froo-froo" dog and I don't dress him up for fun. Okay, my husband and I are guilty of putting funny hats on our dogs on holidays, but that's the limit. My dog is actually a 70 lb German Short-haired Pointer. He's large, he's muscular, he's active and he's happy. So why am a writing a review for a coat?

Short-haired is the key word. He gets chilly and I live in South Eastern PA, where we experience all 4 seasons, and he starts shivering in the fall. Last year, when he was a puppy, I would tuck him up in blankets, but I wanted a better solution for this year. So I started looking for coats. And it wasn't easy, cause most dog clothes out there seemed to be made for small dogs. Finding something practical, and reasonably priced, is hard when it comes to 70 lb and more dogs.

My search took me to the Ruffwear site: http://www.ruffwear.com, with a click on "products" and then "dog coats" I found the K-9 Overcoat. The dog in the pic is a Viszla, very similar to my breed, so I was already feeling good. I read the description and it looked good, plus had the features I wanted...I didn't want a big bulky coat. My GSHP is extremely active, both inside and out of the house, so I wanted something that he could still easily run around in and catch his balls & discs in. He's also a boy, and he's not at all "froo-froo" so I wanted something sleek and sporty looking, which in my opinion this coat is.

But of course, warmth was the most important issue and this coat covers that as well. It has a nice fleece lining, with a chest panel - which I think is important because many coats just cover the back and not the chest. My dog has already worn it a couple of times on chilly mornings and he has not been shivering, so it seems to be doing it's job.

Best part, it's only about $50 - and that's not bad for coats, especially for a dog this size.

Me and my chilly pup are happy with this coat. He was a little bit like "what the heck is this?" the first time I put it on him, but he quickly adjusted and was playing in it, sleeping and sitting in it. I will probably buy a second for him so he has one for indoors and out, and at the price, it's affordable to do that! I might also try the other coat they offer, the "cloudchaser." If I do, I'll let you know what we think of it.

Bottom line, if you have a big dog with short hair and have the same problem I did, I recommend this coat. It's easy to put on, just slip their head through the whole and then clip up the sides. This is big for me because I think it would take me forever to get the coat on if I had to stick his legs in it and velcro up the whole back and so forth.

Lastly, it also comes with 3M reflective strips on the side and includes an area to attach a light, ruffwear sells something called "the beacon" if you have need of keeping your dog visible while in the coat.

I have the same problem. My dog is a short hair and such a heater lush. He doesn't budge from it in the winter time. He has a Ruffwear jacket too and it keeps him warm, keeps the rain off, and has reflectors going down the side of his jacket so cars can see him at night. He loves it! When it's raining or cold and he wants to go for a walk, he grabs his jacket!

I have an 11 pound Jack Russell Terrier who is currently shivering now but he won't let me put a sweater on him. I wonder if a coat like this would be less maddening for him? My dog refuses to allow me to dress him up and I wouldn't. I hate when people do that to their small dogs. lol. Good review!
