We stumbled into Ruby Foo's north of Times Square after walking out on a horrible Broadway play at intermission: we decided to treat ourselves to dinner instead.  And we were happy we did!  Ruby Foo's features dim sum and sushi in various combos or individually, as well as other noodle and stir-fried dishes.  You can choose your own combination, but everything is brought with the hope that diners will share; a set of serving spoons and utensils is brought to each table to facilitate that.  We started with a scallion pancake, which was delicious except oddly enough the scallions were sprinkled on top and not cooked into the pancake, so they kept falling off.  It was served with three sauces -- it seems as if every dish comes with a little tray of three different sauces, and there was not a single one we disliked!  They were innovative and tasty and complemented the food very well.  My companion had a dim sum sampler, with two each of four different varieties of dumpling or pot sticker, and they were terrific.  I ordered a few pieces of sushi which were very fresh and tasty; my ikura roll fell apart, though, as it hadn't been "glued" together sufficiently.  To finish, we ordered a side of shrimp spring rolls (which came with yet another set of sauces!), which were presented uniquely, thinly wrapped on thin skewers, with the skewer end stuck down in a wooden plate and the spring rolls angled up in the air like flags.  They were very tasty.

Our waiter was superb and lots of fun to talk with -- an artist who used to live in our part of the world.  We loved the eclectic music and the darkened room, but could see how it might annoy some folks who weren't ready for that.

We really enjoyed the experience and the food, what a great find!

I used to live within walking distance of Ruby Foo's, and now I live 3,000 miles away (not quite walking distance!) but we have a Ruby Foo's magnet on our fridge. We always thought Ruby F's was very hip and cool. Maybe, a little too cool for us! :)

This restaurant sounds super. We'll have to look for it if we get back to NYC.
