Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper —

I have been searching for the perfect mechanical sweeper for my home which is like many others full of tile and hardwood floors. It seems I just can't seem to find one that picks up crumbs, dirt and dog hair consistently. This weekend while out of town I tried the Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper for several days, cleaning up after two very active toddler/preschoolers.

Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper Price:  Approximately $56.00

Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper Features:

  • Natural boar and crimped nylon bristles
  • galvanized steel
  • ABS plastic
  • easy open dual debris canisters
  • cushioned bumpers

My Viewpoint:  The Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper I think is priced a little too high. Compared to the Eureka and some others I have seen for $20.00-$40.00 it seems that there is a better option available for a lower costs.  Not only is it higher priced but the Rubbermaid Dual Action Sweeper simply just does not do the job.  It picked up smaller crumbs from both the tile floors and area rug, but left larger pieces of dirt and debris (tested on cereal, crackers, and pop tarts).  I then had to use a regular sweeper broom to finish cleaning the floors, which in my opinion really defeats the purpose of a mechanical broom.  The handle was the most frustrating part.  When I picked it up from the closet, the top of the handle came off. When I pushed it away, then pulled it back to sweep the handle came off.  The handle kept coming off and I could find no way to screw it or thread it back on so that I could finish the job.  For almost $60.00 you would think that the handle could stay on, or they could thread it better to screw on tight, or simply create a better design.  Sure, it emptied easy, and didn't scratch surfaces, but what good does that do, if it doesn't sweep and the handle design is flawed?

Overall, my search continues for a mechanical broom/sweeper I can use that will actually keep up with my busy life and messy family.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Oct 20, 2008 at 10:23PM:

I like the one I have -- except for one small detail that it doesn't have that th eother did -- let me check who it is made by also, I get all kinds of comments on my floors how shiny they are, they can even be dirty and people say how great they look????? My secret Fabuloso which is an all purpose cleaner and smells good but make my floors nice and shiny with no sticky stuff. Give that a try too.

I think the one my grandma had was the best...they just don't make them like they use to. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm looking for a really good mop. Any suggestions? I have white and marble-style linoleum floors in kitchen and baths and the marble look always makes my floors look dirty but in actuality it's the gray marble. I've been in my new home now for 5 yrs. and am still searching for the perfect mop, preferably under $20 because I won't use it that often.
