Royal Tenenbaum is a bad father. He always has been. But when fortune turns against him, he looks to his family for help. They are not willing to help him, but through the time they spend together, Royal begins to realize how much he cares for his family, and regrets the time he spent ignoring them.
This movie has a cast that works like glue. Glue that knows how to act. In the title role, Gene Hackman shines as the father turned good. Every character he comes across holds remarkable chemistry with him. Similarily Anjelica Huston is perfect as the ex-wife who is good to everybody in a caring, but not too over the top way. Owen and Luke Wilson ought to act together a lot more. The two of them really take to their characters, and the on screen chemistry is almost brotherly (I wonder why). Every actor in this film takes to their part like a fish to water. I see very little of the actor, and mainly the character. They become the character and make each role 100% believable. Ben Stiller, Danny Glover, Gwenyth Paltrow, Kumar Pullena, Grant Rosenmeyer, Jonah Meyersone, even the actors who portray the younger Tenenbaums are all as close to perfection as any viewer can ask for. The weak link in this cast is Bill Murray. Not due to bad acting, just that when I'm watching the film I think of Phil from "Groundhog Day", or Bob from "What About Bob", or Peter from "Ghostbusters". He doesn't do well becoming his character. He is the weak link, but still fun to watch.
The movie has a strong, user friendly plot well written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. And one can't help but understand that Wes Anderson had a lot to do with how the story is told through the characters due to his incredible direction.
"The Royal Tenenbaums" is a fun movie for teens and adults. Children may enjoy it, there is little to know violence or bad language, with just a small reference to drugs. While watching, and at the end, I did not sit and go, "Wow, that was a really good movie." It was more along the lines of, "Okay, that was odd. I think I'll watch it again."
