A Great Dog Food, but My Dog Wouldn't Eat This.

4

I've only purchased Royal Canin German Shepherd Dog food once at an online store. My German Shepherd didn't really seem to like the taste of this food. So, I gave it to my neighbor for their dogs. In all fairness, this is a decent dog food because my neighbor stated his dogs loved it and started purchasing it for his dogs. I'm not sure why my dog didn't like it. He barely ate half a cup of this each day for a whole week. I had to buy him another brand of dog food as he began to start loosing some weight. Quality of Ingredients I bought this because it looked to have good ingredients and it was on sale at an online store I buy some of my dog food and cat food. I also bought this because it's supposed to help slow digestion and it's made specifically for German Shepherds. The kibble is made cross-shaped that slows the rate of food ingestion. Since my dog didn't eat this very well, he digested it slowly anyway. I do feel this would be a great dog food, if your dog would eat it. It's perfect for large breeds like German Shepherds. I recommend it if your dog has problems with digestion. It's not the best dog food I've purchased where quality ingredients are concerned, but it's still better than a lot of brands out there. The first ingredient in this food is rice, which is really easy to digest. So, this is actually good for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Flavor Selection My dog didn't seem to enjoy the taste of this dog food. He barely touched it and I even tried to mix a little cat food in with it because he loves cat food. He ate through the cat food and left half the dog food in his dish.

Best food for senstive stomachs

5

My Effie  like many German Shepherds,  has a sensitive stomach. She's prone to colitis.  When we switched her to Royal Canin what a difference! She is rarely sick and her coat is soft.  She sheds less too. The higher price is not an issue because it offsets the vet costs and medication costs associated with her illness on other brands. I recommend this brands paws above the rest.

Royal Canin: GSD is pretty darned good, overall

4

While our german shepard mix was alive (we miss you Kodi), the last 5 years of his life we bought only Royal Canin GSD dry food for him. He seems pleased with the make and consistency/crunch of the kibbles (decently sized, but not huge...good for a large mouth) and the taste of the food. Of course, he got additions to his dry food (scraps of leftover beef and chicken, etcetera), but on those rarer occasional when we needed to feed him only the dry Royal Canin, he'd eat it up easily enough. For his somewhat sensitive stomach, it seemed to be pretty good, overall, in sidelining any bouts of queasiness or of intestinal upset. And, as far as health went, there never seemed to be any issue with him getting the proper nutrition from his chow. His coat was usually glossy, and Kodi was apparently well-fortified by the dog food, for we never had a problem with vitamin or mineral deficiencies. For a medium-end dry dog food, I'd recommend it...especially over the standard crud you see folks feeding their pups.

Best I've Found

Lola is my first German Shepherd. She came to me as a rescue, weighing in at only 2/3 of her desired weight at 12wks due to chronic gastro-intestinal sensitivities. I tried all kinds of foods...all high quality, all natural and all good brands. But the only brand that rallied her was Royal Canin German Shepherd. I fed it to her as a puppy and it just simply did the job. Now she's a beautiful, 70lb, gleeful girl, who constantly gets complimented on her shiny coat and elegant, muscular build. It's a bit expensive, but I only feed Lola 4cups a day and she maintains a perfect weight for her size. (And she's a high energy girl.) This really is a good product. If your dog has digestive sensitivities, try it.
