Through this past winter, I had mysterious red, scaly patches growing on both my forearms, in roughly the same spots. They itched a little and were slowly becoming a concern, and nothing I used at home seemed to make any difference. I'm usually very healthy and am not susceptible to allergies, so this was troubling. I planned to make a big annual trip to a huge convention in Las Vegas in April and I wanted to be cured of whatever this was -- time to make an appointment with a dermatologist.
I wanted to find a dermatologist that was near my work, so that I could pop out to the appointment and make it back with minimal fuss. Of course, it had to be a physician that was within my work's health plan, but most physicians in this area (Northern Virginia) are. I more or less randomly chose Dr. Robert W. Gurney, who has an office in a complex that I have visited for some dental work. I knew where it was and could get there easily.
I arrived for my appointment 10 minutes early and Dr. Gurney saw me a couple of minutes before the appointed time -- nice! He was friendly and witty, and immediately made me feel at ease. When I showed him the irritated spots on my arm, he immediately recognized it as eczema. He asked a few questions about allergies, what soap I used and so forth, then prescribed a steroid cream to apply to the sore spots. I made a second appointment for two weeks later for him to check on my progress.
By the time I arrived two weeks later, the scaly patches were gone. As for Dr. Gurney, he was the same friendly and witty doctor I had seen two weeks earlier. Although I spent only a couple of minutes with him each time, I never had the impression that I was rushed. I also got the strong impression that he was both professional and caring.
I was happy to pay the $30 co-pay for these visits. All the concern I had about these sore patches simply faded away when dealt with by a professional. Once gone, the spots have not returned.
I recommend Dr. Robert W. Gurney. I would not hesitate to see him again.
