Rival 1 Liter Cool Touch Deep Fryer Review

For many years, deep fryers were banned from our house.  They were messy, always splattering hot grease everywhere, and I had not used one for a very long time.  While I try to fix healthy meals for the most part, there are some things that just need to be deep fried for best results. Homemade Won-Tons are delicious, but when I tried to fry them in a pan, the result was a big greasy mess!  

We found the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryerat Walmart, which was on sale for around $ 20.00 and what attracted me to this particular model was that it was a locking lid that will keep the hot grease contained inside the unit.  We don't need to have a very large deep fryer, so being that it was only a one liter unit, it seemed to be just the right size for us. 

We purchased the unit, took it home and washed it out and filled it with vegetable oil.  There is a fill line, indicating how far to fill the deep fryer.  It didn't look like much oil and I began doubting the purchase, but it did turn out to be just fine. 

The features of the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer include:

• Cool touch exterior (Regardless of how hot the internal temperature gets, the exterior remains cool and safe to touch)
• Adjustable temperature settings (A plastic knob on the front of the unit controls the heat from 265 degrees up to 375 degrees)
• Power indicator light (Let you know when the unit is turned on and when the oil in heated to the desired temperature)
• Lock down lid (Button on the front of the unit gets pushed in and the lid pops open safely.  Gently push down to close)
• Magnetic power cord (Doesn't technically plug into the unit.  It sits gently on the back and is held in place by magnets)
• Dual filters help control odor
• Comes with plastic drain spoon
• Available in two colors - Solid black or solid white

Now, if you are planning on deep frying food frequently, or deep frying large quantity of food at a time, the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer may not be the best choice for you.  The interior is very small (1 liter) and does NOT hold a lot at a time.  When I fry my homemade Won Tons, I can only fit about six or seven in the deep fryer at a time.  However, since this is not a kitchen appliance I use frequently, I did not want to spend a lot of money on a larger deep fryer.

If you have small children in the home, you probably worry about the safety of using a deep fryer in your kitchen.  My children are older (8 and 13) and it is still a concern for me.  However, I feel that the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryeris much safer to use than other deep fryers.  Unlike other deep fryers, the top is not open.  The grease is safely contained INSIDE the fryer.   The lid locks down, so if the unit was to somehow get knocked or tipped over, the hot grease wouldn't go spilling all over the place.  As long as the button didn't get pushed in, the lid would stay firmly in place.  I also feel safe knowing that the unit will not get hot to the touch.  It stays cool to the touch, even when it's at it's peak temperature.

There are two cons to the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer.  First of all, there is no built in timer.  The timer isn't THAT big of an issue, I just use my regular kitchen timer, but it would be nice if one was built in.  The second con is the magnetic power cord.  I'm assuming that it is supposed to be a safety feature, as Rival calls it the "Sure Release Break Away Cord".  I'm not sure how a magnetic power cord will keep anyone safe, but I do know that the cord can come unplugged very easily.  It doesn't "plug" into the unit.  You just place the magnetic power cord up against the back of the unit, in a specific spot that has two prongs.  The prongs just rest against each other and stay in place by the magnet.  BUT, if you accidentally touch the cord, or move the deep fryer, the power cord comes apart easily.  The thing is, you may not even release it has come apart until you no longer have power to the deep fryer. 

Even with those two cons, I still consider the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer to be the BEST deep fryer I have ever owned.  The worry of being burned with hot grease has been completely eliminated and the lock down lid is a definite bonus.

Bottom Line- I highly recommend the Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer.  If you have white kitchen appliances, purchase this deep fryer in white.  If you have black or chrome kitchen appliances, purchase this deep fryer in black.  Find this product at any department store, or online at websites like Amazon.  If you find it on sale, you will pay approximately $ 20.00.  If you pay regular price, you may pay up to $ 35.00.  It's a great deal for a safe kitchen appliance.
