Wanting to save money is a concern of everyone and especially homeowners, utility bills can drain your wallet fast and I am fighting back. I bought the Ritetemp programmable thermostat to help keep the heating/cooling bill more affordable.

About the Ritetemp

This model is what they call a 5-1-1 programmable thermostat in that it has 1 program for the 5 days of the week, 1 for the weekend and 1 special that you can program as you wish for special occasions. Installing it is not a big deal as you will only be working with 4 wires and they are color coded, also since it is digital you don't have to have it perfectly level. It comes with easy to read instructions and I even found a website that explains it all as well. The memory is saved with 2 AA batteries that power the units LCD display and it has a low power light and warning when the batteries need changed. Even when changing batteries the unit will hold the program for 30 seconds, plenty of time to swap out the batteries.

What I like most is you don't have to stand up wherever you place it in order to program it, nope the main head is detachable and you can sit in your favorite chair to set the thing up! In our house I am home all the time but I like it a little cooler in winter than they do so I set the week days accordingly (as if the house was empty) I set the weekend so that when my wife gets up at 4am for work the house is the way she likes it and then cooled down until just before she gets home. I used the special program for holidays so that guests would be comfortable as well.

When closed the unit shows only the temperature, day and time so it looks sharp sitting on the wall. It is also small in size and measures about 7"w x 3 1/2"W and is about 1 1/2" thick. Flip open the lid and all the setting buttons are right there. To take the unit to a more comfortable place to set it, just push the tab and tilt it out of the housing.

I paid all of $25 for this at The Home Depot and I compared all the rest of what they had as well. This was not the cheapest in price but it was a lot less than the Honeywell models they had. They have them with more bells and whistles but I didn't need that. This one fits my needs and was not a wallet breaker.

Bottom Line

I am keeping the furnace from working needlessly and saving money all with the help of my Ritetemp Programmable thermostat. I didn't pay an arm and a leg for it and was able to install it myself, thus saving even more money. It was easy to install and easy to program and you can raise or lower the temp when you want by just hitting a button. Digital programmable thermostats are more accurate than non digital ones and can help you save money. This one is battery powered so I don't lose the program if the electric goes out, just a great little unit too have!

Go to this website http://www.ritetemp-thermostats.com/images/8022C_operation_guide.pdf

It will tell you how to set the temp on your unit. You will have to set 4 temperatures for each day of the week in order to have it stay at that setting 24/7. Once you set the first day of the week, use the COPY feature to set that to each day of the week. It is not really hard to change it. I hope that helps you. ;) Ron

Just bought a, used, older, mobile home. The thermostat had been set. We are Sr. Cit. and we don't like it, or understand it. We travel alot, and are gone for a couple months at a time. We would like to just have a thermostat that we can set at one temp. We are in Fl. and need it on Day and night. When we are gone for a few months, we just want to set it on "cool", but at 82. Help!

I echo others comments that the unit has true 7-day programming capability.

One problem I have had with the unit is that there is no backlight. In the location I have it I tend to get i the way of my own light and have trouble reading the display, the indicators for the days of the week are very small. I found using a flashlight cures this problem!!

The energy-star program it comes with leaves us sweltering at night, don't know about you all, but we like it cool at night. I changed the program to go down to 75 at night instead of the 82 in the program. I find 77 is OK for daytime occupancy.

Home Depot are selling this as a discount item (presumably replacing with a new model). So the $25 quoted is accurate while stocks last.

Another nice feature not mentioned in this review is the filter replacement reminder. It reminds you after 250 hours of furnace run time. The hourly threshold can be adjusted to suit you furnace/dustiness of your home.

In response to kid-kansas's comment from May 23, 2008 at 2:58PM:

You're correct in that there is a standard 5-1-1 energy star program provided with the unit. However there are other thermostats that advertise and offer only 5-1-1 programming. They are truly limited compared to the 7 day programming offered by the 8022C.

yes you can customize the programming all 7 days, but the built in programs are where they get the 5-1-1 from. Thanks for reading. ;)

I've owned a Model 8022C for 4 years and concur with the reviewer's comments. The company provided me outstanding support to get my unit operational. It turned out that the problem I was having was not with the thermostat but was due to the in-home wires being improperly color coded.

I would point out however that this is not a 5-1-1 programmable unit. It is more flexible than that. All 7 days are individually programmable.
