Richard Simmons Sweating To The Oldies DVD Set —

Quick View: Way back when I was a youngun, Richard Simmons inspired me to work out. His workouts were fun, he was crazy, and he made working out seem like a party. I have since lost all my Richard Simmons videos but recently saw they packaged all his Sweatin' to the Oldies workouts on DVD. I impulsed bought the set. I still like Richard!

About the Richard Simmons Sweating To The Oldies DVD Set

This is a five DVD set. You get all four Sweatin' to the Oldies workouts, uncut and unchanged from their 80's versions. They each have a little message from Richard as he is today and a quick interview at the end but otherwise, they are the same as the videos. There is also a new DVD in the set called "Love Yourself and Win" which has a lot of tips for losing weight and gaining self esteem. I only looked that DVD over but it's a nice extra.

The exercise DVDs are still corny. More corny than ever. But they are still a load of fun. With great oldies songs like "Jailhouse Rock", "Gimme Some Lovin'" and many more, the music plays a huge part in the workouts. You will do moves coordinating with the songs like flapping your wings to "Rockin' Robin" and (aerobically) wiping away tears to "It's My Party".

Each workout is 60 minutes and cardio, cardio, cardio. One of the DVDs has a little bit of toning at the end but make no mistake about it, these workouts are corny and fun but they ARE workouts. 60 minutes is a long time to be dancing around no matter who is leading the class.

As always, Richard has people of all ages and sizes in his workouts. They do change though so that one song you will see a certain person and the next he or she will be gone and then return etc. I only noticed this on DVD. I used to go crazy trying to figure out how people who seemed to be in much worse shape than I could work out and not even sweat and SMILE the whole time. Well, that's because they switch around and I am sure they do multiple takes.

Still, if you're looking for a fun cardio workout, any of the Oldies workouts will do. They are all great fun with lots of throwbacks to the 80's like MC Hammer pants and mullets. But beyond the dated clothes and hair are really good workouts. If you can't stand Richard Simmons, these workouts obviously aren't for you because he sings a lot and he's front and center at all times. You can't drown him out and just listen to the music. But if you don't mind Richard or like him, this set is affordable and may even get you smiling while you sweat. I use the DVDs when I just am not in the mood for anything serious. I have fun and I burn loads of calories.

My Viewpoint

The Richard Simmons Sweating To The Oldies DVD Set is only around $40.00-$50.00 and is well worth the cost. You get four hour long cardio workouts with great music and a crazy guy in striped micro shorts dancing around. I challenge you to do one of these workouts without laughing out loud at least once. And you WILL burn calories. Isn't that the whole idea behind cardio workout? A fun set! 4 stars.

I remember watching him on tv with my mother. We'd workout a bit with him and end up with a laughing fit. Speaking of which - Richard Simmons belly dancing????!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA Thanks I needed that. : )

Haha, just picture someone tipping over and looking like they slammed their finger with a hammer and are doing the pain dance. I am NOT a graceful girl. lol.

I have done both Zumba and belly dancing. Both fun but I like Zumba better. Richard Simmons is entertaining because he actually incorporates moved that coordinate with the words to the songs. I forget I'm exercising and just act out the songs. But then he gets on my nerves. lol.

I liked your reviews of the gal doing the belly-dancing workouts better - a lot better ;)

Katrena wrote on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:34PM

I like the way Richard Simmons has regular looking people in his videos. Maybe I could watch a few of these and incorporate some of his craziness into some of my classes if everybody looks bored. Our Y just added Zumba and Belly Dancing in the last few weeks. (And I'm not teaching either...)

You can borrow them. I like 1 and 3 best. The songs are good and the band is so corny with MC Hammer Pants and mullets that I always have to smile when I do the workouts.

Disregard this comment. I screwed up and replied to someone in the wrong box.

Ya know ... now these workouts, I just might do!

Haha, I have a VCR but lost the videos. Richard is maddening but still kind of lovable.

I think I still have the Sweating to the Oldies on VCR tapes. Funny thing is I don't have a VCR anymore. I enjoyed your review, it was great!
