My quest for knowledge about places with knowledge in Texas continues, who knows where each of my children may land, or where I should start "pre-paying" or saving for! Today, we are back home in Houston, Texas, checking out Rice University and interviewing a graduate of that school.

My daughter attends graduate school in music performance at Rice University. She has been amazed at the orchestral opportunities awarded her and at the involvement of the professors in each student's life. Teachers are challenging but encouraging and their highest priority as a professor is helping each student develop musically (in contrast to holding the priority of their own professional performances). The acceptance rate of the Shepherd School of Music is very limited as the conservatory program is purposefully small so that each student will have much opportunity to play in orchestra.

read full review »Rice University is an elite, highly selective university that retains many of the perks of a smaller, liberal arts college. In particular, there are small classes, easily accessible faculty, brilliant professors, and lots of research opportunities for undergraduate students.
What distinguishes Rice from many other similar institutions is the laid back, non-pretentious, non-competitve feel. Students are incredibly collegial and laid back, creating a great environment for learning. The campus is much more friendly and down-to-earth than other schools, perhaps in part because of the smaller price...
