Recently one of my good friends got this new gadget. The Reynold's Handi-vac. When I first saw it I thought, "whoa.. what is that?" He explained what it was. I didn't think it was very practical.
However, I decided to do some research after he demonstrated it to us. It seemed really great. I did the research. It is only $9.99 for the handi-vac and the bags are about the same price for regular ziploc bags!
I still held off and researched some other options. I looked at the Foodsaver and other food vacuuming systems. They're generally at least $100. They seem to take up a lot of space (which we don't have much of) and the bags are quite costly. Also, people complained of the heat seal coming undone eventually.
I also found that some people would rewash their bags. So if I'm just throwing veggies in the bag, I'll rewash it and use it for veggies again.
We broke down and bought one. Although, me being as frugal as I am found one on Ebay. We ended up paying .99cents and $6.50 in shipping. So I saved us a couple of dollars! I also go to Walmart to buy the bags and I stock up. They seem to have the lowest price. You can also go to the Reynold's webiste and get a coupon for the handi-vac or bags!
I finally got the handi-vac and the bags and started using it. I must say I am totally impressed with it! It's cheap, it works very well!
You can use for everything, not just frozen foods. It keeps cheeses and produce fresh longer too! I also keep cookies and such in them as it keeps them fresher longer too!
I highly recommend this product. I can pretty much guarantee that once you get it, you won't stop! It is a really awesome gadget.
Oh, side note too: when you first get it, when pressing the vacuum to the little hole, don't press too hard, it won't work as well. The gallon bags take longer to suck the air out than the quart size bag as there is more air!
You will LOVE this!
