Reynolds Handi-Vac Handheld Vacuum Sealer —

REYNOLDS HANDI-VAC VACUUM SEALER

I received the starter kit, along with 2 packages of bags, for a gift.
The starter kit includes the vacuum sealer, (with batteries included!), and 3 quart size Handi-Vac freezer bags.

To use this handy little gadget, you place the food you want to freeze into the Handi-Vac bag, making sure you keep the food below the fill line on the bag, then close the zipper. You then lay the bag flat on the counter, then press the sealer flat against the air valve on the bag, push the button, and in seconds, the air is removed from the bag. It's actually pretty cool! You can now put the food in the freezer and know it will be protected from freezer burn.

The only downside is that the Handi-Vac bags are kind of expensive, but I use this tip I got from my mom; she puts the food in a regular, cheap, zipper plastic bag first, then puts it into the Handi-Vac bag; that way the Handi-Vac bag stays clean and you can reuse it.

I recommend this if you freeze a lot of small portions of meat, poultry, or vegetables. For liquids, such as soup, I will still use my plastic containers instead.

The sealer unit is small enough that you can easily store in a kitchen drawer.

Actually, when my mom gave me this, she gave me 2 extra boxes of bags, so I think I have enough for now that if I keep reusing them I won't have to buy any more bags for a very long time.

I wondered if this was any good or not. I love your mom's idea about putting the food in another bag first - what a great idea! Do you like it enough that you will keep buying the bags?
