I've been a fan of Resident Evil since the first game came out way back in 1996. When I heard that it was finally coming to the big screen, I was extremely excited. Having seen the first two Resident Evil movies (Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which were actually pretty good), I had somewhat high expectations for Extinction. Thankfully, my expectations were met. Not exceeded but definitely met.

Plot
: A caravan of survivors from the Raccoon City disaster travel across the Nevada desert in search of supplies and other survivors. Alice (Jovovich) hears them transmitting a radio signal and decides to join up with them. When the Umbrella Corp. stumbles upon Alice and the caravan, they try to capture her.

Extinction starts off somewhat where Apocalypse left off. They really don't give too much backstory so, if you plan on seeing this, it might be a good idea to see the first two beforehand. The acting was pretty mediocre but that's to be expected with a movie like this. It really doesn't take away from the movie at all so, it's acceptable. Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Ashanti, Mike Epps, and Oded Fehr are a few of the talents in the movie. The directing was pretty well done and the cinematography was decent. I jumped probably 8 times total, which is more than average. This might have been because the movie was incredibly loud, more so than usual, especially during the mutant murder of crows scene.

The really amazing thing in Extinction was the special effects. The zombies looked incredibly scary and disgusting. The gunshot wounds were especially brutal, plenty of headshots. At some points during the movie, I was almost believing that the zombies were real and that people were really getting eaten. Then again, I'm the type to immerse myself in a movie and detach myself from the real world while watching it. Also when Alice uses her psyonic powers, the CGI (computer generated image) is pretty amazing.

Overall, Extinction performs well in progressing the storyline and the ending leaves it open for a sequel. I highly suggest going to see this one if you've seen the first two, or are just into graphic horror movies in general.

MPAA Rating: R (for for non-stop violence, language, and some nudity)

Runtime: 1 hour 35 minutes

Year: 2007

Rating(out of 10): 8.0

Side Note: I'm not sure if they are doing this at every theater but, they actually checked all of our I.D.s to make sure that we were 21 and not just 17. So for some odd reason, we had to be 21 to see the movie. Could have just been my theater but be sure to have ID when you go to see it.

Great review. I enjoyed reading it. I didn't know about the 21 thing either. Weird.

Yeah, I've never heard of that 21 thing either...weird. I haven't seen this one yet, but I enjoyed the previous R.E. movies, so it's only a matter of time! Great review!

I never heard of having to be 21 to get into an R rated movie. That's weird!
