Rescue Me Review Summary

Ever wonder what the everyday life of a firefighter is like, especially in a big city? Well, according to reviewers, Rescue Me comes as close to depicting that life as anything before it. Created, written by and starring Denis Leary (co-written and created by Peter Tolan), Rescue Me centers around a New York City fire house and its main character Tommy Gavin (Leary) in the aftermath of 9/11. Gavin is a hero, but a damaged/flawed one. He struggles to come to grips with the death of his cousin and best friend, Jimmy and turns to drugs, sex and alcohol to help him cope. He also sees dead people, mostly fire victims but sometimes Jimmy. In the meantime, he is part of a fire house of characters who are complex and unforgettable, not to mention confronting demons of their own. Rescue Me deals with all this and the fires that occasionally rage in the Big Apple. "if you are into something that is more true-to-life", you will enjoy this because "The story lines and plot twists are incredible." and "this show is outrageous and great at the same time.". These are real, if often profane, people dealing with real problems while having to be local heroes. Rescue Me presents firefighters as people with warts with a job to do, and they do it well. As one reviewer notes, " I'm also a firefighter so it's nice to see shows that have a realistic quality to it." About to begin its fifth season on FX, Rescue Me, is not for the faint of heart, "If you're one who doesn't tolerate foul language and some crude/lewd behavior, then this show probably isn't for you." , specializing in realism and burrowing into the minds and motives of its central characters while giving us plenty of fire-fighting action. All our reviewers recommend Rescue Me.

I will go on record as a Denis Leary fan.  I loved his last TV series, the too short lived The Job, which appeared for one measly season on ABC in 2001-2002.  That show, about a burned out NYC cop, was a comedy that just didn't suit everyone's tastes.  Leary's is an acerbic wit and doesn't appeal to all, even though his observations are usually spot on.  In fact, he can be so acid-tongued, folks are often surprised to learn he is a family man.  So,  after strong initial ratings, The Job fell into ratings hell and ABC quickly abandoned it.  Luckily for us, a couple years later the folks...

After watching about three seasons of Rescue Me commercials, I finally decided to watch an actual episode.  To my delight and dismay, it was one of the best shows I had ever seen and tragically, it was the season finale.

The season finale was so good I went straight to Blockbuster online and rented all three seasons so I could catch up in time to watch season 4 when it aired live on TV the next season.

The reason why Rescue Me is one of the best shows I have ever seen is because for one, the characters are perfect.  They are realistic people handling realistic problems in life.  They...

There is not enough words that can describe Rescue Me other than Fantastic and you have been missed the past year and a half.  The addition of Micheal J Fox to the cast is going to even make this a better season than before.

The eclectic mix of actors and their characters they play are amazing. Even though we know that Tommy Gavin is selfish he is also with heart this is the best work that Denis Leary has ever done.

When watching it, have a tissue because there are the moments where you feel such heaviness in your heart and can actually imagine yourself there when they share stories of firefighting,...

This show has been around for 4 seasons and is still going strong. If you have noticed TV the last, probably 5 to 10 years, you'll notice a lot of shows don't make it past 1 or 2 seasons. If your one who doesn't tolerate foul language and some crude/lewd behavior, then this show probably isn't for you. However, if you are into something that is more true-to-life than you should find this show very addicting. I'm also a firefighter so it's nice to see shows that have a realistic quality to it. What I mean is, they don't show this big explosion that you know would never be possible. The effects and... read full review »

I have been watching tommy gavin since day one. No regrets here. I get to see a side to firemen that i never have. I do give them credit and respect for the jobs that they do. Watching dennis leary has given me a whole new prospective on the responsiblities that they have to deal with. This show has is all laughs, action, suspense at times and of course the sorrow. The death of his son was so heart crushing. watching him deal with the death just tore at your heart.  I am also sorry that they have let the captain go. He is surely missed. I just wished they wouldn't have killed him off. But the...

I watch very few television shows because most are pointless, poorly written and overall stupid.  Rescue Me is none of the above.  in fact, it is brilliant!  I look forward to each new episode.  The program goes from serious to humorous in a flash.  It is believable.  For example, in the April 14 program, witness John Scurti's and Denis Leary's comments about 9-11 to the visiting French writer.  Outstanding!  Both nailed it.  If you are sensitive about your children's television content, this is not the program for you.  It is for ADULTS with adult content and language.  If you want...

I love, love, love Resue Me.  I started watching in the middle of second season and I was hooked.  I was starting to get worried that it wasn't coming back for the 2008/2009 season because of the writers strike but leave it to them to come out with the mini episodes to keep me hooked until I can get my full hour fix.  The story lines and plot twists are incredible and from someone who has family involved in the fire departments around the U.S. it really shows a lot of realistic things.  If you haven't watched it - you have to give it a chance - you will be hooked.

This show is so shocking every time I watch it. I just can't believe Tommy Gavin still gets the girls. It amazes me how they seem to just latch to him and he treats them so horrible.
I love how Franco has developed a friendship with his ex-girlfriends brother. It's nice to seem him show empathy and concern for someone.
The whole gang on this show is hysterical. I can't believe their antics and outcomes. It is a funny, but outrageous hour of television.

Rescue me is a wonderful show with great acting. The characters in the firehouse and the women they love are so flawed and yet form a group of people that need each other. The comedy in this show is fresh and rewarding to watch. The main character of course has the most story lines but the crew att he firehouse is what keeps it fresh.

Dennis Leary is FANTASTIC in Rescue Me -  it has everything I want in a TV show...realism, drama, suspense, comedy.  One of the best TV shows ever produced.
