It's hard to believe a movie can be both "meaningful and disturbing," yet these are two words that Viewpoints moviegoers are left with after watching Rendition. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, this film deals with "suspicion and ramifications of political actions and decisions," as a pregnant wife begins a search for her husband when he doesn't make it home on his international flight. He's been detained in the Middle East by his own country as they think he has terrorist links. Because of this very topical plot, reviewers are suggesting "every American citizen needs to see" Rendition, as they hope it will open up some eyes. Many reviewers mention the connection between this film and 9/11, so a great double feature could be created between this and World Trade Center.

Meaningful and disturbing

I chose Thanksgiving Day to go see Rendition. Perhaps not the best way to follow up a happy meal, but I certainly left the theater thankful for several things, and pondering others.

Rendition tells a cautionary tale of post-9/11 suspicion and ramifications of political actions and decisions. The movie follows a young pregnant wife, played by Reese Witherspoon, whose husband doesn't make his flight home. We follow Witherspoon as she tries to untangle the wheres and whys of her husband's disappearance.

With two family members in Iraq, I'm actively tracking all I can regarding this war and months back investigated our countries "extraordinary rendition" program involving our CIA and the "black holes" we've developed. I don't believe half our citizens are even aware of the rendition policy let alone our newly Bush founded extraordinary rendition. And tho this is just a movie, perhaps it could make people aware of what our government has become.

Watch it if you dare.

This movie left me thinking. How many people has this really happened to? I hope the government never suspects me or any one I know of helping terrorists! With the new law that was passed after 9/11 this stuff really happens! FREAKY!
