In February of 2001, I became so indescribably depressed due to being diagnosed with a terminal illness, I was a Freshmen in high school and had to be on homebound whenever I wasn't in the hosital. I'd spend my days sobbing uncontrollably, I could barely eat, I lost interest in everything, sometimes I'd never leave my room or open the blinds. I insisted that all mirrors be covered with newspaper, all windows closed so no sunlight could shine in. I would wake up very early in the morning and dry-heave with other severe stomach complaints-----all symptoms of Major  Depressive Disorder. I needed an antidepressant, and that's when I consulted the new Psychiatrist in town.

Now, I had been on many, many anti-depressants before, particularly SSRIs, and they never agreed with me. My psychiatrist insisted that Remeron was "different," the only antidepressant in its class, as it was not an SSRI (it's technically a noradrenic reuptake inhibitor).

It puts you to a calming sleep within minutes of taking it, so I took it at bedtime. It also makes you very, very hungry, and that was a plus for me because I was struggling with my appetite. It blocks the serotonin receptors in the stomach which means if you take an additional antidepressant along with Remeron, you won't get a tummy ache from it. It took about 4 months to reach a peak effect, but I swear, the first few years of being on it were the best years of my life. I learned to deal with my illness better, it lifted my depression and helped me to accept my circumstances. I'm a major mental case, so take it from me.....this is the real deal. Unfortunately, I can't go to sleep without it, and if I miss a dose, I get a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia). It is because Remeron basically works on receptors to slow everything down----the worrying, the sadness, the tummy troubles, and the heartbeat. However, it doesn't cause any type of negative cardiovascular issues. It is a miracle drug and I'm terribly disappointed that it gets bad reviews simply because it increases appetite. I guess people gain a lot of weight on this drug but it is NOT from the drug, it is from the appetite stimulant. I assure you, that symptom eventually goes away........along with your terrible panic disorder/depression/axniety.

Hi,

I have been taking Mirtazapine from the past 4 weeks. I was on Prozac but had to make a switch because of side effects being caused by it. Unfortunately, so far I haven't seen any success using Mirtazapine. Propably it will take time but I am not sure. I just hope it starts working! Prozac was very effective on me but it too took around 6 weeks to kick in. I guess I have to be patient but what do I do till then... I dont think I have an answer for that.

Regards,
