An outstanding film, chronicling the trials and tribulations of a high school football team undergoing forced integration during the early seventies. Based on a real life situation, this movie depicts the racial conflict so prevalent during that era. Denzel Washington is superb in the role of Herman Boone, a black coach taking over the reins of the football team during the first year of racial integration at an all white school. On the path to an unbeaten season, he teaches the team, the school and the community to judge people by their abilities, rather than their skin color. The scene where he takes the team to the Gettysburg graveyard and in a speech compares their actions to the Civil War battle is one of the most intense and touching scenes in modern film history, with lessons we are still struggling to learn. A must have movie for any DVD collection.
