Redhook is one of the best- known Craft Breweries in the United States. It has been around since 1981 and it now produces a nice variety of crafted brew. Ales are the specialty of Redhook and the company's products are all brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516; a law declaring that beer can only be brewed suing the basic ingredients (barley malt, hops, yeast, and water). One of the company's more popular and widely distributed products is also the subject of this review. Clear, copper body, with a thin, off-white head. Cobweb-like lacing. — — The aroma was all right, but I wish it was a bit more pronounced. Inviting balance of malts and hops. — — The flavor confuses me, as I don't think it's quite correct for the style. If the malt played a slightly larger role, or the hops took just one step back, then I think this would be a much better ESB. Yes, the balance gets a little better as the beer warms, but I don't like having to wait for that. — The mouthfeel is very nice, however. I've had a variety of great beers - Belgian, British, Portland locals, etc. - and find that Red Hook's ESB compares favorably. It's a solid choice for a good beer, and tastes good cold or at room temperature. I do prefer it, though, in the fall and… read full review »
