After not crocheting anything for a few years, the crochet bugg bit me a few weeks ago and I cannot stop crocheting!  I read an article in the paper about a guy who collects lap blankets for injured veterans and haven't been able to stop crocheting them since.

I have a few favorite yarns but the one I turn to most is Red Heart Super Saver.  It is widely available in the craft stores in my area and I can usually find enough of the same dye lot in each color to finish my project.

Red Heart comes in many different colors from solids to ombres, camo, and fleck so I never have an issue finding the color that I want to use. In fact, the problem I tend to have is deciding which of the many colors I want to work with.

Red Heart comes in large sizes too which I like.  Some of the more specialty yarns are much more expensive but you only get three to three and a half ounces for about $3 to $4 each.  Last week I bought 5 ounce skeins of Red Heart for $2.49 at Michael's and $1.99 (on sale) at JoAnn's.  This makes it one of the most economical yarns available on the market.

Red Heart is fairly soft. It's not the softest inexpensive yarn I've used (Caron has one called Super Soft that is amazing) but it's pretty good. I think sometime it depends on the color.  A few times I've grabbed skeins of Red Heart in the store and they feel picky and stiff so I put them back.  The 30 or so skeins I bought last week though are quite soft and will result in comfortable blankets.

One other nice thing I like about Red Heart is that most of the colors are 100% acrylic and can be washed in the washing machine and tumble dried.  When I give an afghan as a gift I always wash it first so it's softer, totally clean and smells good so washability is very important to me.  As is giving a gift that is low maintenance. I'd hate to give someone a gift that they feel they need to take special care of.  This is a very low maintenance yarn and it washes up well.  The flecked yarns are 96% acrylic but can be washed and dried as well.

Some of the Super Saver yarns have a dye lot but others do not.

Yeah! A fellow crocheter. I've used the Red Heart for years for all of the reasons you mentioned. FYI: If you haven't tried Bernat Satin, it's my new favorite and it's also 100% acrylic.
