Oh, where to even begin. Rebecca's at the Lodge and I have an interesting history. When I moved to New Mexico and into the dorms, it turned out that my new roommate (and subsequently, my best friend) was from this little tiny town that caters to lots of tourists in the Sacramento Mountains called Cloudcroft. I heard stories and stories about Cloudcroft, plenty about Rebecca's, which is a common place for hard-working high school students and college students to earn their tuition throughout the summers and winters. This definitely does not mean anything bad about the service, though. It is very thorough and professional.

Anyway, after hearing these stories day and night, Rebecca's had been hyped up (as had CC, as it is affectionately abbreviated). Eventually, my roommate dragged me down to this stunning part of the state. I couldn't believe my eyes- you have White Sands and this beautiful, lush valley full of pecan orchards and then you go up a bit and are in the most picturesque mountains. It really is a home away from home for me now.

When you step into the main dining area of Rebecca's, you walk through the main seating area for the resort, which is quite overhwhelming with a giant, giant chandelier and fireplace. The place is gorgeous. The interior of the restaurant portion, though, is my favorite part of the place. They just redecorated and there are lots of warm reds, medium-toned woods, crisp white table linens and bright glistening glasses. The main dining room (the only one I've ever seen occupied although there are other rooms available) is all focused towards the leaded and stained glass windows that frame the mind-blowingly beautiful mountain sunset every night. This room is gorgeous. It is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. You have no idea.

So anyway, with my roommate's trusty 1/2 employee discount, we decided to take full advantage of the menu that is normally far beyond our price range. The cheaper dishes (pecan-crusted trout, macadamia-crusted salmon, etc) start at about $24. I think you see what I mean about those prices. They even have a full, five-course meal, the Chateaubriand, which is, I believe $90 for two people. This is definitely fine-dining and so you should expect fine dining prices. Don't worry, though, the quality is not lacking. That food is so tasty. I would dream about the pecan-crusted trout I had that night for weeks. The duck my roommate had was so delicious that even though I only had a taste, even I had cravings for it afterwards. This is dinner, though. Lunch is said to be appreciably different in prices, not quality. That helps if you're a budget diner (like I am), so I often find myself trying new places out only at lunch time. Lunch is generally filled with golfers trying to meet tee-times and couples leisurely making their way out of the resort, so don't worry about being rushed out. If you are in a hurry, though, as the golfers always are, maybe you should come in a little early.

Breakfast is a whole new story. I don't really know where to begin...all I really want to say is "OH MY GOD." The prices are a little high, lower than Sunday brunch prices (much much), but are reasonable and comparable to what you might find around Albuquerque or Santa Fe. I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. It was really good, but I kept getting confused on why I ordered smoked salmon instead of ham when I am super picky about when and where I eat seafood (but that's me just being crazy). It was awesome. BUT what I really wanted, and should have ordered, was a Rebecca's specialty that consists of two, count 'em TWO, fresh, homemade cheese danish dredged through egg batter and served like French toast. Um, yum! That was the most amazing dish I've ever tried for breakfast and I am the pickiest of breakfast eaters. It is remarkably unhealthy, though, but you've got to live a little, right? And if you're about to go hiking or something, won't you burn those calories off? ;)

As an important sidenote that perhaps should have been way up in the beginning, Rebecca's is that name that refers to the Lodge's supposed ghost, Rebecca, who was the murdered mistress of a married man. She is said to haunt the Lodge and it is rumored her ashes are hidden in the tower (my friends and I are sure we found the urn, but then again we are young and superstitious). This is lore, though. Back in the day, this place was overrun with celebrities. Al Capone once owned the bar (not sure about the back story of this) and in the tower, all sorts of celebrities have signed their names on the walls, including Judy Garland! If you know your old-time movie history and have a flair for fine dining and legend, give this place a try. It's pricey, but you've got to come in some time. It's really, really worth it. Try lunch or breakfast if you're budget conscious or befriend an employee to get their discount :P Either way, get in there! It's a can't-miss stop when Down South!

It was a lot of fun reading this and very exciting to know that a place like this is out there whether I ever get to see it or not. Hope you are having a nice dinner out for Friday evening and that you will have a nice weekend!
