Ravelry is a site created for knitters and crocheters. While there is a social aspect to it - there are message boards for just about every interest you can think of - the real beauty lies in the tools available. When you sign up, you have a "notebook." In your notebook, you list all your yarns and hooks and other such tools in your stash, ongoing projects, finished projects, books and patterns. Then you can browse the notebooks of other people, do searches for specific yarns or patterns, or for a pattern with a specific yarn, etc. If you see a pattern you'd like to try out, you add it to your "queue," which then means that, in your notebook, you have the name of the pattern, where to find it, the hook and yarn requirements and what other people thought of that particular pattern.

It's truly all encompassing for knitters and crocheters (or "loopers," "yarners," or "fiber enthusiasts - all those names work, too!). It's the product of one woman's love of knitting and the man who loves her's love of programming.
