Pet rats are clean wonderful small animals. Most people associate them with sewers and the plauge, but a pet rat is as different from wild rats as a wolf is to a domestic dog.

Pet rats act a little like a dog in many aspects - can be trained to walk on a leash, learn tricks, wag their tails, etc.

Pet rats also act a bit like cats/kittens - they play fight much like a cat or kitten, some twitch their tails just before pouncing on a moving toy, or when play fighting with their owners hand, etc.

Pet rats also have some interesting quirks that are uniquly their own - some like to clean their owners -...

I own two rats named Sabastian and Oscar.  I have had them for about a year and they are sweet, interesting, eat anything I put in their cage and have such realistic personalities it's incredible.  Sebastian is the one that loves everyone and will run all around the house or just sit on my lap while I do school work.  Oscar is slightly skiddish and when he is out of his cage he likes to be hidden inside my shirt or under something.  Also, when Oscar gets loose it's almost impossible to get him back, but Sabastian will come right back.  It's fun to see the wonderful pleasure in owning and caring... review »

Rats make very good pets.  We have a dozen currently.  They are smart and well-behaved.  You will need to play with them frequently, if not daily as they crave attention.  They are not particularly messy as long as you keep their cage clean on a weekly basis.  Our rats live in a rat condo and we vaccum out the cage daily and clean it thoroughly once a week.

Rats come in many varieties.  We have regular fancy rats, as well as blue, dumbo, and hairless.

I owned pet rats throughout high school and college.  When my children are older and I look to get another pet I will definitely look for a rat.  They are easy to care for and take up a small amount of space.  Play with the rat daily from a youmg age and he or she will trust you.  They are very intelligent and interactive.  The only drawback is they have a short lifespan and it can be hard becoming attached and losing the pet so quickly.

Rats have such a bad reputation. They are smart, fun, and adorable. They come in all kinds of hair coats- coarse, hairless..and you can get dumbo rats, with giant ears. They like to be quite social, and are easy to care for.The only real downfall besides their very short life span, is that female rats tend to get many mammory tumors, which do need to be removed by a vet. So, if you plan on getting a rat, make sure you can afford the vet bills. One of my girls had 4 tumors removed in her lifetime (4 years)

I used to have rats a few years back. My rats had always been sweet-tempered, great with my nieces and very cuddly. Rats are also smart, amusing, clean, protective pets who will grow very attached to you. As for the fear of biting, all animals can bite so keep your hands clean while handling your rat, and don't be aggressive towards your little rattie friend or he/she will return the favor, but then again so will any animal. The tail is nothing to fear, as it is what keeps your rattie balanced. All in all, rats are good pets who don't eat much and can be cared for by children as young as eight with...

I got my rats in about February of this year and I absolutely love them. They ar ethe most affectionate little creatures and strangely enough they love the cats, although the cats are terrified of them. They each have their own little personalities and love to play. My rat Roxy has a bit of an attitude and doesn't like to play as much as her sister Reina. They both detest their baths but put up with them fairly well and for the most part are very clean. They love their treats and toys and love to run around the room and me! I'm so happy I have these little angels in my life.

I got my first rat about 6 years ago and have loved them ever since! They are so intelligent and friendly, like tiny little dogs. I wish more people would give them a chance instead of saying the tail freaks them out and things like that.
They are especially great pets if you don't have a lot of space or are renting and can't have a dog or cat. What wonderful little creatures they are!
Give them a chance, you might like them or even love them. Keep in mind just like there are dog and cat rescue groups, there are rat rescues looking for good homes also.

Okay there is no other pet that compares to the rat. First off let's discuss convenience....they are not hard to clean up after and you can lock them in a cage when you are not able to play with them. Now let's talk personality....these little cuties are busting with energy and it has been shown in studies they are equally intelligent to dogs. I actually have rats and they are trained to return to me with I shake a rattle. Smart little cookies. Rats are also loyal and friendly. Best option for a pet when you can't make the commitment to a dog or cat.

As a breeder of rodents my favorites are rats..hairless as well as the African hooded. They are very clean and social animals who show their love to their owner in spades. I have sold many babies to other breeders and pet lovers who never would have believed that they are great pets until they met my mated breeders and saw them climbing all over myself and my grandchildren without biting or showing any bad habits

Ok, so many people get grossed out when I say I have rats as pets, it is scary. You would think I told them the had an extra head. The truth about rats is that they are very smart, they are clean, they do not smell as long as you clean them regularly, like anything else, and they make great pets for kids because they are sooo gentle. My rats, and I have had them for years , have all been very sweet, with the exception of three. I have had about 20 or so total over the years and overall they are so sweet. They are gentle with children and very friendly. Some of mine will come up to you climb on...

Domesticated rats are fantastic pets for anyone willing and able to devote even an hour per day to interacting with and taking care of their furry friends. With very few exceptions, rats should generally be kept in same-sex groups of at least two. (The same-sex rule is null if all rats of either or both sexes are spayed or neutered.) Rats are often and rightly referred to as the dogs of the small animal world - they're very interactive, intelligent and clean animals. They are easy to train and only need a small amount of space compared to larger animals, so they're also great for city living in...

I have a one-year old pet rat named sputnik and she is basically the best animal ever. she never bites, loves to climb, and will come when i call her! don't be afraid by common misconceptions about rats -- they can be very loving and sweet. and they don't bark or claw up the furniture!

My rat Icarus is a year old and one of the most intelligent animals I have ever owned. Think of rats as small dogs. He has been potty trained and can recognize faces. A great first pet because they only need food a clean cage and love. I will only say that if you want a total friendship with your rat, I would recomend only one rat at a time, otherwise they will become close to the other rats.
