I had been seriously coveting a Rainbow for more than 20 years because all my husband's sisters had one and they loved theirs, but the price kept scaring me off. Finally I found a refurbished one for $200 and felt like the gods had smiled on me. I have three vacuums--to go with my three cats. I have a Kirby, a Rainbow, and a small light Hoover "stick" vacuum that I mostly use for quick pickups on smooth floors like the kitchen. I use my Rainbow about 95% of the time. The Kirby has been relegated to just serving as the carpet shampooer. The Rainbow is simple to use; you fill the tank with water and set the vacuum unit on top of that. If you're used to using an upright vac, dragging the canister around and having the cord following you takes a little getting used to, but it's worth the trouble. The handle of the Rainbow will get low under most pieces of furniture, unlike an upright. The best part of using the Rainbow comes at the end of your cleaning session, when you get ready to empty the water and clean the tank. The first time I used the Rainbow, I had vacuumed the day before using the Kirby, which is a fabulous vacuum cleaner itself. But when I opened the tank and saw how black the water was, I actually cleaned the tank and vacuumed the whole house a second time because I was astounded at how dirty my floors were. (There was enough cat hair floating in the water to make a new cat!). There's something comforting about taking the tank and dumping the dirty water outside and knowing that That Dirt won't ever be back. And because the dirt gets trapped in the water, it doesn't filter through your vacuum cleaner bag and get deposited on all your furniture as dust. I used to spend a lot of time dusting furniture, but the Rainbow has helped control that, too. Dumping the water and cleaning the tank is easy, but it's kind of a pain to get rid of the water in the winter when it's snowing out--you can't put this stuff down your drain. You have to get rid of it outside somewhere. That would be a drawback for someone who lived in a condo or apartment. If you like a clean house, want to spend less time cleaning, and like to see results of your cleaning, the Rainbow is the machine for you!

I would love a Rainbow Vac... but like you it's the price. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.
