I bought my first Rainbow vacuum in the late 70s, had it for 20+ years. I'm on my 2nd rainbow and feel that none of the others out there can hold a candle to it. Sure, it's a little more work to empty the dirty water after each use and cleaning the separator is a pain, but man, is it ever worth it! I bought both of mine used and had them reconditioned. I had to add the power nozzle to the first one as it did not have one. With regular maintenance and proper cleaning, the value is unbeatable.
Being a working mom, I only do a thorough vacuuming once a week, which includes moving the tables and furniture. (I'm a little obsessive about my vacuuming technique.) Every 2-3 months, I attach the drapery brush and run it over the lamp shades, door lintels and baseboards.
The carpeting in my 1976 home lasted 22 years before needing to be replaced and I feel that it was due to the great performance of this vacuum. I live in Phoenix, AZ and it keeps down the dust from filtering back into the air during vacuuming, can be used as a humidifier, air purifier, wet vac (to suck up spills) and shampooer. My tv screen remained dust free while using this vacuum. In between my 1st and 2nd rainbow, I cheaped out and bought a regular canister vacuum. What a disaster! Dusting became a tri-weekly job and the tv screen had to be cleaned daily, not to mention the dust buildup on tables, knick-knacks, pictures, etc. It was the only period in my life that I could write notes in the dust midweek.
When my children were crawling, the knees on their clothes did not get stained from crawling on the carpeting. It only took about 10 minutes of crawling in other people's homes for their knees to get filthy! As one of my sons has allergy related asthma, getting the dirt, dust mites, mold spores and other allergens out of the carpet and furniture cushions helped keep him from having severe attacks.
The problem most people have with this vacuum is taking the time to clean the separator, being too lazy to empty the water every time and leaving the parts separate to dry out between uses. You don't do that, you will rust out the motor. Having a power nozzle is essential as it keeps your carpeting in good condition. I called my first one R2D2 as it was silver and remined me of the robot from Star Wars.
