Shop Vac will hopefully save my basement!

I am the owner of a 100+ year old home. Last year, we chose to finish our basement and as part of the process, we put drainage tiles in our basement.

In most weather conditions, even excessive rainfall, the basement does exceptionally well-- and remains dry. However, this week in Chicago, we got record high rainfall- 8 inches in one day.

My basement withstood the water levels pretty well-- except for in one room. (of course, the carpeted room). The drainage tiles could not keep up with the excessive water levels.

My husband and I got out the SHOP VAC and started sucking up the water as it spread across the room and underneath our carpet. We filled the shop vac almost 4x with water suction before we stopped and crossed our fingers.

We dont yet know if it is going to do the job, and keep us from pulling out all our carpet. But, we do know that it kept us from having standing water in our basement. And, for that, I am very grateful to the shopvac.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I have a funny/sad story about my dad's shop vac. My dad got one for Christmas. One day he loaded it in the back of his truck to take to a friends house. When he was on the highway, the shop vac took a ride out of the truck and crashed. My dad forgot to close the tailgate. Anyways, I love my shop vac and it comes in handy all the time. My dad cannot touch it, though. LOL.

Great review. My dad swears by his shop vac and keeps using it year after year .. this year it helped save the kitchen after a pipe burst and flooded the floors.

I recently had to use a shop vac to vacuum up water from a Hot Water Tank issue. It was so fast and easy but I would hate to have to see how it works on several inches of water.

Great review. Honest and straight-forward. With all the rain we have had lately I appreciate you taking the time to write this review. Our fingers are crossed for you!

We'll have to think about this. We put in a sump pump but the water has to be 3 inches. Last time it rained for 4 days straight we got water in the basement. Hubby was recovering from surgery so there I was with a mop. Hmm..Thanks! Jo

Wow Jolie, hope that you have found the shopvac did the trick!

yeah, we've spent a lot of money on water prevention. We got a little that weekend but it could have been a whole lot worse. We osed a craftsman water vac to pick up the water we did get and nothing was damaged.

dig a hole in the lowest point and put in a suction pump.

In response to bkovacs's comment from Sep 24, 2008 at 12:43PM:

Goes to show you Im not very savvy about this stuff. I have a Rigid. I just call it a shopvac....

bkovacs wrote on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:43PM

Jolie, is it a Shop Vac or is it a Ridgid? They are two different brands. People sometimes use the term "shop vac" as a generic word for a workshop vacuum cleaner, but Shop Vac is a brand name like Kleenex and Xerox. So do you have a Shop Vac or a Ridgid vacuum cleaner?

Thanks!

I've used shopvacs many times on constrution project and have had good success except for with using it on drywall dust. Sounds like it did a good job for you also. If you have to remove the carpet I would suggest using the carpet tiles when you replace it. We had to install a sump pump in my grandparent's basement in Baltimore to keep the basement dry on those rare occasions. Good luck on the drying out.

I couldn't get along without my Shop Vac. In fact, earlier this evening I used it to service my friend's central air conditioner. A couple of minutes and we were able to clear a clogged drainage line. Great review Jolie.

8 inches of rain! Where I live we only get a little more than that in a whole year. I hope you dry out soon.
