RED ICE
by
Brian Davies
RED ICE is a story about how Brian Davies, a boy from the valleys of Wales who grew up in England, became a soldier in Canada and who, at last, finds his purpose in life. A man from a very ordinary back-ground becomes aware of man's inhumanity to the animal world.
RED ICE tells how Brian Davies became a member of a small group of people determined to stop the brutal massacre of baby seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, how this led to the formation of the International Fund for Animal Welfare(IFAW).
IFAW started with a simple philosophy: animals feel fear and pain and they suffer too much of both at the hand of man.
IFAWwas formed in 1969 and now has over 720,000 active supporters around the world.Today IFAW operates offices in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Italy, France, Australia, Hong Kong, and South Africa.
Brian Davies has been sent to jail, been banned from Canada's icefields of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, ( the killing grounds of the Seal pups) and has been subjected to physical violence.
He tells about finding two whitecoats, baby seals that are three or four days old, he named them Jack and Jill. Since Jack and Jill was so young they had to be intubated. A plastic tube is pushed down their throat, a funnel is placed at the other end and the whale oil is poured into the funnel. Jack and Jill found a home at the City of Vancouver Zoo in British Columbia.
Brian Davies describes the inhumain killing of the baby seals, how they are clubed, and skinned alive.
