I read alot of bad things about this vcr/dvd recorder combo. But after seeing the extra plug-in on the front if it, to plur in my camcorder and the built in turner,,, I was sold.. I went to wal-mart and bought one.. I figured if it was bad, I could take it back.. Guess what ? It was. NO sound on the vcr side.. So I took it back and got a second one.. WOW .. I'm  glad I gave it that second chance.. Because it is everything I wanted and more.. I have two other brands{ SONY&SANYO} in my spare rooms and they say PLAY and RECORD.. But you have to have a tuner box.. So buy the RCA and give them a fare chance.. I did and I'm so happy ..now I watch and record ==Life is so much better now..  THANKS RCA

Recieved this unit as a gift a couple of years ago, and have had no problems with it.  Installation was simple, the unit is compact and sleek, and our family can still watch our old favorite VHS tapes anytime.  This unit saves the cost of seperate DVD and VHS players, and takes up half the space it used to require to view our library of films.  I hesitated in giving this unit a full five stars simply because I haven't had to pay for any cost of repairs, and reading other reviews I have a small level of concern.  As for how it's performed, it rates a full five stars.  My grandchildren have favorite old movies on VHS and now we can still watch them without spending more money to get them in DVD form.  And using the same unit, with a simple push of a button we can all enjoy the best of DVD quality movies too.  I have had some good, and bad, experiences with RCA equipment, but this unit lives up to its claims.

This VCR/DVD recorder was purchased about 1 1/2 years ago for the sole purpose of copying old VCR tapes to DVD.  After it was purchased, I began working full time and did not have the time to do this.  The machine was only used occasionally to watch a video tape or DVD.  Two weeks before the warranty was up, a video tape was inserted and would not play or eject.  I called the company and, since it was still within the 1 year warranty period, was told to return the player.  I did this and a new one was sent to me within a reasonable time period.  This was in the first part of April 2009.  As a Christmas gift, I was going to record some old VCR tapes to DVD for my husband.  This "new" machine had only been used a hand full of times, if that, during the time period since it had been received.  When trying to play the video tapes, there was a  lot of "static" on them which would cut out the signal to the DVD recorder causing it to stop recording.  I assumed the "static" was because the tapes were very old until I put them into another VCR that I had and they were perfectly clear.  I tried calling the company and was told to clean the heads and to unplug the machine for 30 min. to let it reset to see if this helped.  Needless to say it did not help and upon calling the company back was told that this replacement machine only had a 90 day warranty which had already expired.  I then tried to hookup another VCR to this one so that I could at least use the DVD recorder.  After recording several hours onto the DVD I then tried to finalize the DVD.  It wouldn't let me finalized because it stated it was an unformatted DVD.  Then it started telling me that it was a bad disc.  (This was the 3rd disc in a row that it stated was bad).  Now it won't even play a pre-recorded DVD because it states that it is a bad DVD).   Now I am stuck with same as new machine that will not play video tapes without static (even new pre-recorded ones) and will not play or record dvds.  I thought RCA was a quality company but I will not buy anymore products from them,  Overall, this product is a piece of crap and the customer service is crappy.  It is not even worth the one star that I had to give it.
