Quick Step UniClic Laminate Floor Tiles - Tramonto —

We'd only had our kitchen tiles for about 5 years when I began to notice assorted gouges, rips, scratches, spots, and areas of discoloration.  We had erringly opted for the standard builder's grade, peel-and-stick vinyl tiles when we purchased our house.  In addition to the various pockmarks, many of the tiles had begun to separate and shift.  I knew I wanted to replace them, but I also wanted to do it on a very limited budget.

After much browsing of different floor types and materials, we decided upon the Quick Step Uniclic Laminate Floor Tiles in Tramonto.  This patented "floating floor" product was affordable because we didn't have to remove the previous vinyl tiles.  That saved us a good chunk of money before we even got started.

Quick Step Uniclic tiles come in a variety of colors and textures that simulate real stone.  Unlike real stone, however, the Quick Step tiles are easy underfoot because they have more "give" to them than the real stuff.

The installers worked nearly 8 hours to move appliances and install nearly 300 square feet of tile.  First, they laid down a barrier material over the existing floor.   I snuck a peek a few times to watch how the installers clicked the panels together and connected them one to another.  They made it look easy, although I have a sneaking suspicion it's probably a lot trickier than it appears.

We were given the option of having the tiles laid out in a straight line, but we were strongly advised to stagger the tile placement (similar to how patio tiles are installed).  Apparently, the staggered pattern makes for a more resilient and durable installation.  I also liked that it gave the kitchen a more "bistro" look than a straight pattern would have.

I'm thrilled with the final result.  (And this is from a woman who experiences buyer's remorse after nearly every major purchase).  No, we're not going to fool anyone that this is "real stone" but I think the product stands on its own merits.  It's attractive, a complete breeze to maintain, resists scratches and gouges, has no grout lines to seal or clean, and it's an affordable upgrade from basic vinyl flooring.  I'm expecting that this product is going to last a lot longer than 5 to 7 years.

Overall, I highly recommend Quick Step Uniclic Laminate Floor Tiles.  The list price for the Tramonto tiles is $5.19/square foot.  According to the manufacturer, each tile is 15.5 inches square and 8mm thick.  A carton of 10 tiles covers 16.68 square feet.  We had ours professionally installed by Empire Today, and it's also available at iFloor.com.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Jan 1, 2009 at 8:25PM:

I used to have the same issues after cleaning my old floor. It never really looked clean to me because so many tiles had begun to discolor. I'm really happy with these floor tiles. My pictures don't do them justice--they have a lot of depth in the coloring. They also have options that look like hardwood--there are a lot of possibilities.

I like this! I am wanting to replace my marble-looking floor with something that looks like hardwood floors. My floor is a white with gray marble and I hate cleaning it. The gray gives the perception of streaks and smudges and I am constantly leaning over to inspect a floor that is actually clean. Thanks for this review! ~Gigi
